Cleveland Guardians Survive Thrilling Battle with Pirates

Giving up six runs in one inning usually means that you lost.

The Cleveland Guardians overcame that calamity and beat the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates 10-8 last night.

Ben Lively gave up six runs in less than five innings, but the Cleveland bullpen fought off the Pirates until the offense could come to the rescue.

THIS WILL BE EASY … RIGHT?

Cleveland cruised to an early lead, as Josh Naylor hit a two-run double in the first inning.

In the fourth, the Guardians doubled the lead on a sacrifice bunt by Austin Hedges and a single by Steven Kwan.

Pittsburgh unleashed the full-scale Pirate Invasion with six runs in the fifth inning. They blasted the Guardians with these two-run cannons:

·      A single by Oneil Cruz

·      A double by Andrew McCutchen

·      A homer by Rowdy Telez

NOT SO FAST, VILLAINS!

The Guardians bounced right back in the bottom of the fifth to grab the lead back at 8-6.

Josh Naylor started the comeback with an RBI single. He scored when “Big Christmas” Jhonkensy Noel walloped homer No. 13 into the left-field bleachers.

Andres Gimenez stepped to the plate and hit his sixth dinger of the year.

Pittsburgh cut the lead to 8-7 on a single by Cruz in the sixth.

LET’S BREAK A RECORD

It’s always fun when the Guardians give Emmanuel Clase insurance runs before a save situation.

David Fry and Josh Naylor supplied RBI singles in the eighth to give Clase a 10-7 lead. Naylor is up to 98 RBI, third best in baseball.

Clase needed the help because McCutchen led off the ninth with his 17th homer of the year to right field.

That’s No. 317 in his 16-year career, and he hit to a kid in a Pirates shirt!

But Clase put Pittsburgh away for his 150th career save, breaking the Cleveland record that he shared with Cody Allen.

The Guardians toasted Clase with champagne in the locker room. And he’s only 26 years old!

The series will continue at 6:10 p.m. Matthew Boyd (1-0) will start for Cleveland against the Pirates’ Luis Ortiz (5-4).
