Cleveland Guardians Roll Over Slumping Kansas City Royals 7-1

If Cleveland Guardians starters are going to keep limiting opponents to one or two hits, then this team is going to go far.

One day after Gavin Williams gave up one hit in seven innings to the Kansas City Royals, Tanner Bibee gave up only two in six innings.

As a result, the Guardians cruised to a 7-1 victory at Kaufmann Stadium.

The Royals have lost all seven games since they tied the Guardians for first place last week. The slump also coincides with the loss of third baseman Vinnie Pasquantino, who is out for the season with a thumb injury.

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Cleveland didn’t overwhelm the Royals with offense at first. Brayan Rocchio hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning, and Andres Gimenez added an RBI single in the fifth.

Kansas City scored its only run on a sacrifice fly by Paul DeJong to cut Cleveland’s lead to 2-1.

Rocchio proved to be the offensive star of the game with a two-run homer in the seventh inning off KC left-hander Sam Long.

The Guardians expanded the lead to 7-1 in the eighth inning. Rocchio started the rally by drawing a walk with the bases loaded.

Steven Kwan added the exclamation point with a single to score Will Brennan and Lane Thomas.

Guardians relievers Nick Sandlin, Pedro Avila, and Scott Barlow kept the Royals off the scoreboard over the final three innings.

WHERE’S MY BROOM?

Cleveland will go for the sweep tonight as the teams meet at 7:40 on Fox Sports 1. Ben Lively (11-8) will start for the Guardians against Royals All-Star Seth Lugo (14-8).
