Cleveland Guardians’ Rally Falls Short as Colorado Rockies Win 7-4

In Colorado or anywhere else, it’s tough to bounce back when your starting pitcher gives up seven runs in less than two innings.

The Cleveland Guardians tried to overcome this obstacle but fell short 7-4 on Wednesday night.

After scoring 13 runs in the previous game, the Guardians kept rolling with two runs in the top of the first inning.

Josh Naylor grounded out to first to score Andres Gimenez, and David Fry singled to bring home Jose Ramirez.

The Rockies picked up a run in their half of the first inning on an infield single by third baseman Ryan McMahon.

The roof caved in on Cleveland starter Logan Allen (6-3) in the second inning, as the Rockies scored six runs. The biggest blow was a two-run homer to left by second baseman Brendan Rodgers.

COMEBACK TIME?

The Guardians struggled to bounce back, as they often swung at the first pitch and made life easier on Colorado starter Ty Blach (2-2).

After putting up seven goose eggs on the scoreboard, Cleveland finally rallied in the ninth inning.

Will Brennan came up as a pinch-hitter and singled to score Johnathan Rodriguez. Brennan later scored on a single by Brayan Rocchio.

Freeman drew a walk, but Giminez struck out to end the game.

One silver lining for the Guardians was the performance of the bullpen. Eli Morgan, Tim Herrin, Sam Hentges, and Pedro Avila held the Rockies scoreless for 7 1/3 innings.

Colorado is on a 12-7 run after a disastrous 8-28 start to the season.

HOMECOMING

Cleveland has the day off on Thursday before starting a three-game series at Progressive Field against the Washington Nationals on Friday night at 7:10. Tanner Bibee will start for Cleveland against the Nats’ Patrick Corbin.
