Cleveland Guardians Comeback Falls Short as Detroit Tigers Prevail 5-4

Tanner Bibee settled down after a rough start, but the Cleveland Guardians couldn’t recover and lost to the Detroit Tigers 5-4 on Wednesday night.

Colt Keith ignited the Detroit offense with an RBI triple in the first inning. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Vierling to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

Cleveland tied the game in the third inning when Angel Martinez hit a ground-rule double to score Bo Naylor and Steven Kwan.

Vierling hit a two-run homer off Bibee in the bottom of the third to put Detroit back up 4-2.

Bibee (7-4) shut down the Tigers all the way through the seventh inning, setting the stage for the Guardians’ comeback attempt.

Daniel Schneemann blasted an opposite-field homer to left in the fourth to cut the Tigers’ lead to 4-3.

Detroit scored an insurance run on a solo homer by Andy Ibanez in the eighth inning.

LAST CHANCE

That was important because Cleveland’s ninth-inning rally fell short by one run.

Andres Gimenez hit a sacrifice fly to score Josh Naylor and cut the lead to 5-4.

But pinch-runner Gabriel Arias was tagged out in a rundown (not his fault), and Austin Hedges grounded out to end the game.

A NEW FACE

Spencer Howard will make his Guardians debut as the starting pitcher today as these teams wrap up a four-game series at 1:10 p.m.

Howard was 1-1 with a 5.63 earlier this year with the San Francisco Giants.
