Cleveland Guardians’ Carlos Carrasco Is Heading to New York … Again

Carlos Carrasco gave the Cleveland Guardians some much-needed innings as a starting pitcher last year.

Now he’s heading to the New York Yankees after signing a minor-league deal.

This is the second time “Cookie” has made the trip from Cleveland to New York, although the circumstances are different.

CAREER JOURNEY

Carrasco, now 37, was born in Venezuela and came up through the Philadelphia Phillies’ minor-league system.

Cleveland acquired Carrasco in the trade for Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee. Carrasco debuted for the Indians in 2009.

Carrasco was a Cleveland mainstay all the way to 2020, although he missed the 2012 season after Tommy John surgery.

Cookie hit his prime when he turned 30 years old. He was 18-6 with a 3.29 ERA in 2017, and he went 17-10 in the following season.

He bounced back from a bout with leukemia to win the 2019 Comeback Player of the Year Award.

OFF TO NEW YORK (PART 1)

The Tribe traded Carrasco and Francisco Lindor to the New York Mets in 2021 in exchange for Andres Gimenez and three others.

After an injury-plagued season, Carrasco bounced back to post a 15-7 record for the Mets at the age of 35.

Cleveland welcomed Carrasco home last year. He went 3-10 but cranked out 103 innings for the Guardians’ beleaguered starting rotation.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

The Yankees must think Carrasco still has some gas left in the tank. The Guardians might also feel better about this year’s rotation if they allowed Cookie to head to the reigning American League Champions.

We’ll see if the Guardians look up one day to see Cookie in pinstripes on the mound, ready to face his old buddies.
