Cleveland Guardians Bolster Bullpen by Signing Luis Frias
The Cleveland Guardians rode their dominant bullpen all the way to the American League Championship Series last year.
The team added to its relief corps yesterday by signing right-handed pitcher Luis Frias.
He split time between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Toronto Blue Jays last season.
Frias missed time in the first half of the season with shoulder problems.
When he returned, he pitched seven games for the Snakes and four for the Blue Jays.
Cleveland is hoping that Frias can contribute to the bullpen like he did in 2023 for Arizona, which went to the World Series that year.
During that season, Frias was 1-0 with a 4.06 ERA.
STOCKING THE STORE
Earlier in the offseason, the Guardians added 25-year-old right-hander Luis Ortiz in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Ortiz pitched in 37 games with the Pirates, including 15 starts. He was 7-6 with a 3.32 ERA.
He will step into the starting rotation after Michael Boyd and Alex Cobb signed with the Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers, respectively.
In addition to those starters, the Guardians will need to replace Eli Morgan and Nick Sandlin.
Morgan has moved on to the Cubs, and Sandlin will pitch next year for the Blue Jays.
Their departures could pave the way for Frias to make the team if he looks impressive during spring training.
