Cleveland Guardians Add Pitcher, Complete Mini-Sweep of Detroit Tigers

The Cleveland Guardians teed off on the Detroit bullpen in a 5-0 victory on Tuesday to take both games of their mini-series.

Gavin Williams pitched five shutout innings to pick up the first victory of his injury-delayed season.

Before the trade deadline, the Guardians picked up starting pitcher Alex Cobb from the Giants. Cleveland Indians fans remember Cobb pitching for the Tampa Bay Rays and knocking the Tribe out of the 2013 playoffs.

Cobb is 36 years old now and coming off hip surgery. So we’ll see if he can support the Guardians rotation, which is anchored by Williams, Tanner Bibee, and Ben Lively.

WELCOME BACK, JOSH

Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt gave Josh Naylor the entire Philadelphia weekend off, and that idea worked. Naylor homered in the fourth to give Cleveland a 1-0 lead.

Daniel Schneemann doubled in the fifth inning to score Tyler Freeman.

Jose Ramirez continued to dominate Detroit’s bullpen, which pitched the entire game for the third day in a row. He blasted a two-run homer in the eighth to put Cleveland up 4-0.

Ramirez is now in sole possession of second place on Cleveland’s all-time home run list with 243. He passed Albert Belle and now trails Jim Thome by 94 homers.

Brayan Rocchio, who recently tweeted “Be patient,” hit a solo homer in the ninth to give the Guardians the 5-0 margin of victory.

Cleveland’s bullpen completed the four-hit shutout. Tim Herrin, Nick Sandlin, Cade Smith, and Emmanuel Clase each pitched a scoreless inning.

After a 4-1 road trip, the Guardians have earned a day off. They will begin a four-game home series with the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday at 6:40 p.m.

Ben Lively (9-6) will start for Cleveland against the Birds’ Dean Kremer (4-7).
