Charm City Shootout: Cleveland Guardians Beat Baltimore Orioles 10-8

Bo Naylor and Gabriel Arias collected three hits apiece as the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Baltimore Orioles 10-8.

Cleveland has won seven games in a row, while the Orioles have lost their last five.

This was the slugfest that fans expected from these two teams, and Naylor and Arias provided firepower from the bottom of the batting order to go with the usual heroics from Jose Ramirez.

Guardians starter Lance Allen gave up three home runs in three innings. He has an 8-3 record, but his ERA has ballooned to 5.72.

Pedro Avila (2-1) picked up the win for Cleveland, which now enjoys a nine-game lead over Minnesota in the American League Central Division.

OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION

David Fry doubled to score Jose Ramirez in the first, and Gabriel Arias knocked a two-run double in the second.

Baltimore was keeping pace, as Jordan Westburg’s RBI double put the Birds on top 4-3 in the third inning.

Cleveland scored five times in the fourth. Brayan Rocchio and Steven Kwan hit RBI singles and came home on a three-run homer from Jose Ramirez that even Earl Weaver would have appreciated.

That home run moved Jose past Manny Ramirez into sole possession of third place on Cleveland’s all-time home run list. Only Jim Thome and Albert Belle have hit more bombs.

The Orioles didn’t give up. Allen gave up back-to-back jacks in the fourth to the bottom two hitters in the lineup, James McCann and Colton Cowser.

McCann’s RBI groundout in the seventh cut the Cleveland lead to 8-7.

The Guardians extended the lead to 10-7 when Bo Naylor hit an RBI triple and scored on a single by Arias.

Former Cleveland minor-leaguer Anthony Santander hit his 21st home run to cut the lead to 10-8, but Emmanuel Clase kept the Orioles at bay in the ninth to earn his 25th save.

Cleveland will go for the road sweep tonight at 6:35. Carlos Carrasco (3-6) will take the mound against Baltimore’s Grayson Rodriguez (8-3).
