Charlie Blackmon Announces Retirement
Colorado Rockies franchise great Charlie Blackmon has announced his retirement after 14 MLB seasons.
“I’ll hop over that fence pickle the beast and embrace the next phase of my life,” Blackmon said at the end of a social media statement on Monday.
Blackmon spent all 14 years of his Major League career with the Rockies and will finish second in all-time games played in Colorado history behind the hall-of-fame Todd Helton.
“I have been blessed to call the city of Denver and the Colorado Rockies my baseball home for the entirety of my career,”. “I am grateful for the support of this organization, my teammates, and most of all Rockies fans. It is with a thankful heart and a career’s worth of memories that I choose a new path.”
Four of his 14 seasons saw Blackmon be named to the All-Star team including three straight midsummer classics from 2017-2019.
2017 was Blackmon’s best season in the big leagues as he took home the batting title with an average of .331 and slugged 37 home runs and 104 RBI to go along with it.
That season was one of two in which Blackmon took home a Silver Slugger award, the other being in 2016 where he slashed .324/.381/.552 with 29 home runs and 82 RBI
Only twice did Blackmon play in the postseason, once in 2017 when Colorado dropped the NL Wild Card game to the Arizona Diamondbacks and again in 2018 where the Rockies would defeat the Cubs in the Wild Card game but get swept by the Brewers in the NLDS.
During this offseason, Blackmon signed a 1 year $1 million contract to return to the Rockies for what he most likely knew would be his final MLB season.
2024 hasn’t exactly been up to Blackmon’s standards as he enters the final week with a batting average of just .249, the lowest of his career.
In the 2024 season’s final weekend, the Rockies will honor Blackmon during their three-game set against the Dodgers.
Sunday afternoon’s contest will feature a special pre-game ceremony honoring the stories Rockies career of Charlie Blackmon.
