CC Sabathia Joins Ichiro Suzuki, Billy Wagner in Baseball Hall of Fame
Cleveland Guardians fans are marking their calendars for July 27 for a possible trip to Cooperstown, N.Y.
Radio announcer Tom Hamilton will be honored with the Ford C. Frick award, and CC Sabathia will be inducted as a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
Sabathia broke into the big leagues with the Cleveland Indians at the age of 20 and won 17 games in his rookie year of 2001.
His best season in Cleveland was 2007, when he won the Cy Young Award with a 19-7 record, a 3.21 ERA, and 209 strikeouts.
After a brief stop in Milwaukee, Sabathia pitched for the New York Yankees for 11 seasons. He won a World championship in 2009 and finished his career with 251 victories.
ICHIRO IS ICHIBAN
(That means No. 1.)
Ichiro Suzuki was also a first-ballot Hall of Famer, earning all but one vote. He single-handedly raised the popularity of American baseball in Japan, and he’s the first Japanese player inducted into the Hall of Fame.
During his remarkable 19-year career, Suzuki amassed 3,089 hits with the Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, Miami Marlins. He also won 10 Gold Glove awards.
Suzuki didn’t start racking up these stats until he arrived in America at the age of 27, and he played until the age of 45.
BILLY WAGNER CLOSES THE DEAL
While Sabathia and Suzuki made it to Cooperstown on the first try, Billy Wagner made it in his 10th and final year of eligibility.
He picked up 82 percent of the vote, with 75 percent being the target.
Wagner racked up 422 saves from 1996 to 2010 with the Houston Astros, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, and Atlanta Braves.
