Can New York Knicks Create Package To Acquire Lauri Markkanen?

The New York Knicks have been linked to big names this offseason after being eliminated prior to the Eastern Conference Finals.

The Knicks were ravished with injuries and this led to being knocked out of the postseason by the Indiana Pacers. Jalen Brunson took a major step this season while the supporting cast looks strong in New York. The front office has decisions to make this offseason and work to do in adding another star.

One name that has been tossed around is Lauri Markkanen but the problem is, the Utah Jazz want a massive haul for the big man. Is there a package that can be put together by the Knicks?

Markkanen averaged 23.2 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. He shot 39.9% from three-point range, which is an area that would help New York right away.

This is what a potential trade might look like:

  • New York Knights receive: Lauri Markkanen
  • Utah Jazz receive: Julius Randle, 2024 First-Round Pick (from DAL), 2025 First-Round Pick (from DET), 2026 First-Round Pick, 2027 First-Round Pick Swap

One piece that would have to go back to Utah would be Julius Randle. The Knicks signed Randle to a lucrative deal and the Jazz would have to take this contract. This would allow them to either move Randle once again or take on his deal. This would also leave room for the Knicks to extend Markkanen.

The Knicks also have other short-term deals that can be moved, such as Bojan Bogdanovic.

The Jazz have made it clear that they would also want a ransom of draft picks, which the Knicks have from previous years. With the Knicks advancing in the postseason, draft picks will not be prime but they will still be in the first round.

The addition of Markkanen would fit the Knicks because of his age at 27 and ability to shoot from deep. He has improved each year in the league and the combination with Brunson would give the Knicks a duo to rely on moving forward.
