Can Jose Ramirez Crack a 40 … or Two?

Jose Ramirez has a chance to join one or two rare baseball clubs today.

As the Cleveland Guardians face the Houston Astros in the season finale, Ramirez is one home run away from joining baseball’s 40/40 club.

That means 40 homers and 40 stolen bases. Coming into this year, the club included Jose Canseco (1998), Barry Bonds (1996), Alex Rodriguez (1998), Alfonso Soriano (2006), and Ronald Acuna Jr. (2023).

Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers became the sixth member of the club this year. But he entered his own stratosphere by creating the 50/50 club.

Ramirez has 40 steals, and he hit his 39th home run last night in the Guardians’ 4-3 loss to the Astros. So that’s something to watch today.

But Ramirez also has 39 doubles. If he can hit a double and a homer today, he will join Soriano in the 40/40/40 club.

THE OLD MAN COMES AROUND

Justin Verlander, age 41, picked up his 262nd career win last night, pitching six innings and giving up three runs.

Ben Lively (13-10) only lasted four innings, but he was the victim of a defensive blunder.

After Ramirez’s homer gave Cleveland a 2-1 leader, Lively walked Jon Singleton with the bases loaded to tie the game.

Then Zach Dezenzo hit a chopper to shortstop. Brayan Rocchio uncorked a wild throw to first, allowing two Houston runners to score.

Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 4-3 in the third inning, but neither team could score for the rest of the game.

WILL THIS PASS LEGAL MUSTARD?

In the hot dog race, Mustard showed up with his lawyer, who was wearing a mustard-colored suit.

He asserted that on-field reporter Andre Knott had doctored the video footage and caused Mustard’s 27 wins to be overturned.

Mustard got his wins back, and he won yesterday’s race. That sets up a climactic showdown with Onion today for all the marbles.

Nick Sandlin (8-0) will open the game on the mound for Cleveland. Gavin Williams will take the ball next, as manager Stephen Vogt wants to see how he performs out of the bullpen. Game time is 3:10 p.m.
