Building Momentum: 3 Eagles to Watch vs. Patriots
As the Eagles prepare for their second preseason test against the Patriots, several players are starting to make their case for key roles on this year’s squad. After last week’s game, a few players truly stood out and are now looking to keep their momentum going. Here are three players I’m keeping an eye on:
Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Before last week’s game against the Ravens, there was already some buzz about Trotter potentially becoming a starting linebacker for the Eagles later this year. However, Trotter is quickly building a case to start sooner rather than later. Against the Ravens, he racked up six tackles and one sack. During the joint practice with the Patriots, Trotter added an interception to his resume. With his natural instincts at linebacker, it’s going to be hard to keep him off the field if he continues to perform at this level.
Jalyx Hunt
This was supposed to be a “redshirt” year for Jalyx Hunt, and it still might be. But against the Ravens, he showed exactly why the Eagles were so high on him. Reviewing the tape, you can see why the coaching staff liked his potential. On the play where Trotter got his sack, Hunt was instrumental—dropping into coverage, passing off the tight end, and then quickly making up ground to cover Ravens running back Rasheen Ali. He flashed a lot of potential, and I’m eager to see him build on this momentum against the Patriots.
Will Shipley
Will Shipley is in a battle for the RB2 spot on the team, and I believe he’s closing the gap. Throughout camp, both coaches and players have had nothing but praise for him. Head coach Nick Sirianni had this to say: “He plays big, I think. When you look at him, he’s built. His lower body is really built… There are things about him that remind me of Danny Woodhead. I look forward to him continuing to progress. We’re really excited about him.” Me too, Nick. Me too.
As the preseason continues, these players’ performances will be crucial not just for their own careers, but for the Eagles’ success in 2024. Keep an eye on Trotter, Hunt, and Shipley as they aim to solidify their spots on the roster.
