Browns vs. Saints, Why Am I Watching?
It’s the Browns, I’m always watching. Cleveland plays New Orleans this Sunday at the Caesars Superdome, 1:00pm EST. Last week the Saints broke a seven-game losing streak and beat the Falcons 20-17 and the Browns had their bye. The Saints are currently a 1.5-point favorite.
Browns Offense vs. Saints Defense
Cleveland is ranked 31st in total offense (274.4 yards per game), 28th in passing offense (183.4 yards per game), 28th in rushing offense (91 yards per game) and 29th in scoring offense (16.4 points per game). New Orleans is ranked 28th in total defense (385.6 yards per game), 29th in passing defense (244.6 yards per game), 27th in rushing defense (141 yards per game) and 23rd in scoring defense (24.6 points per game). This might be the game the Browns can establish a running game. Besides being the 27th rushing defense, the Saints have given up twelve rushing touchdowns, four 100-yard rushers and 5.2 yards per carry. Both running back Jerome Ford and Nick Chubb should benefit. In the passing game, quarterback Jameis Winston, will have to be very careful. New Orleans has forced twelve interceptions and have a plus four turnover ratio. Their secondary is holding opposing quarterbacks to a sub 80 QBR. The Saints pass rush has 22 sacks and against the Falcons pressured 50% of the game. Prior to last week, they pressured 21% of the time. Winston will benefit from having the same starters on the offensive line for the third consecutive game. Cleveland will have to stay within the game plan and run the ball.
Bowns Defense vs. Saints Offense
Cleveland is ranked 16th in total defense (328.2 yards per game), 13th in passing defense (205.7 yards per game), 14th in rushing defense (122.6 yards per game) and 21st in scoring defense (23.7 points per game). New Orleans is ranked 16th in total offense (334.8 yards per game), 16th in passing offense (212.4 yards per game), 13th in rushing offense (122.4 yards per game) and 16th in scoring offense (22.7 points per game). The Saints offense starts with Derek Carr who is 4-1 versus the Browns. His primary weapons will be running back Alvin Kamara, tight end Taysom Hill and wide receiver Marques Valdes-Scantling who all had big games last week against the Falcons. Kamara leads the team in rushing, receiving and offensive touches. Hill is a mister do everything, and Valdes-Scantling had his best game this year against the Falcons, three catches on three targets, 109 yards and two touchdowns. Cleveland will need to shut down the running game and account for Kamara and Hill in the passing game. The Brown’s safeties will need to step up and cover both. As for covering Valdes-Scantling, that job should fall on Denzel Ward. Cleveland has been tops in the league in applying pressure and the Saints will start rookie Taliese Fuaga at left tackle where he’s given up five sacks and 27 pressures. His Pro Football Focus pass block grade is only 54.3. He’ll face defense end Myles Garrett, who lines over the left tackle 82.5% of the time this year. Carr’s QBR drops to 81.2 when pressured. Cleveland will have to respect the Saints play action and stop the big passing plays.
