Biggest Surprises In College Football After Week 2

The 2024 college football season might be just two weeks old but there have been many surprises, both teams and individual players.

Below, check out some of the biggest surprises from the opening weeks of the year.

Florida State

This has to be at the top of the list to begin the season.

The Seminoles were a injury away from the CFB Playoff last season after an undefeated year. Mike Norvell hit the transfer portal hard and expected to bring back a team that would contend for a National Championship. Instead, it was a major swing and miss at the quarterback position.

DJ Uiagalelei has struggled in his first two games, consistently missing wide-open receivers, and has to be close to being benched. On the other side, Florida State has been unable to stop the run and this has led to sustained drives from opponents.

An 0-2 Florida State team was not expected heading into Week 3. The season is close to ending in the first month for the preseason ACC champs.

Northern Illinois defeats Notre Dame

This is one of the biggest upsets in years and definitely the biggest in the history of Northern Illinois.

The Huskies marched into South Bend to take on an Irish squad coming off a road victory against Texas A&M. As four-touchdown favorites, Notre Dame held a small lead in the fourth quarter before Kanon Woodill nailed a 35-yard field goal to win the game.

Head coach Thomas Hammock is in for great things moving forward and Northern Illinois has put the country on notice.

Oregon’s Rocky Start

It might not be a rocky start in terms of wins and losses but a 2-0 Oregon team has struggled to find consistency.

The Ducks came into the season with hopes of competing for a Big Ten title during its first year in the conference. Dillon Gabriel is a Heisman favorite but the offense has struggled to put up the expected numbers. It was an unimpressive Week 1 victory over a lowly Idaho team. In Week 2, the team needed a last-season field goal to defeat Boise State.

Oregon struggled to stop Ashton Jeanty on the ground. Dan Lanning has not clicked offensively just yet. The road is difficult ahead and Oregon has chances to make up for this slow start but it will take some doing on both sides of the ball.

Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt has been at the bottom of the SEC for years now but will that be the case once again?

The Commodores were big underdogs in Week 1 against Virginia Tech. Despite blowing a 17-0 lead, Vandy came away with an overtime victory. The 2-0 Commodores, led by Clark Lea, have taken on a new identity.

Vanderbilt looks like a capable team this season. Now, that could change once SEC play begins but through two weeks, Lea has built a new identity within the program.
