Big Ten Championship Game Preview: No. 1 Oregon vs. No. 4 Penn State

The Big Ten Championship Game is just four days away and it will feature some new faces.

The winner of the Big Ten will be a Top-five team looking to build momentum heading into the first 12-team College Football Playoff.

  • Who: No. 1 Oregon vs. No. 4 Penn State
  • What: Big Ten Championship Game
  • When: Saturday, Dec. 7 at 8pm ET
  • Where: Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, IN
  • Spread: Oregon -3.5
  • ML: Oregon -165, Penn State +155

It will be a battle between two teams with different histories in the Big Ten.

Oregon is in its first season in the conference after expansion to 18 teams. The Ducks come in as the top team in the nation with an undefeated record. As for Penn State, it is looking for its fifth conference title and first since 2016.

The Nittany Lions won the Big Ten title nearly 10 years ago and it feels as though this was the last big win for James Franklin. Penn State has struggled to defeat the powers in the conference in recent years and that includes a loss to Ohio State this season. In fact, Franklin has defeated a top-five team just once during his tenure at Penn State.

The Nittany Lions will bring a defense that ranks top six in scoring defense and total defense. Penn State has been able to stifle different offensive systems over the course of the season and will face the best it will against Oregon.

Dan Lanning has led Oregon to scoring 30 or more points in all but two games this season. It was a slow start for a new-look Ducks team in a new conference. That was quickly erased as Oregon became the top team in the nation and remains the lone unbeaten team in the FBS. Lanning brought in Dillon Gabriel to work with an elite group of wide receivers that can move the ball at will when in a rhythm.

Something will have to give in this matchup. It’s an elite Penn State defense against one of the best offenses in the nation in Oregon. Who do you give the edge to? It will be an entertaining game between two teams that will look to beat you in many different ways.

When the clock hits zero, there will be a champion in the Big Ten not named Ohio State and Michigan.
