Best Super Bowl Matchups Remaining

As NFL fans are preparing for this weekends Divisional games, I tend to look forward to what the best possible matchups are from the remaining 8 teams in this years playoffs. Of the 16 remaining possible Super Bowl matchups, I have made a list of the top 4 remaining matchups that I would like to see and the reasons why. Lets dive in.

4. Commanders vs Texans

So this game might not be the top of everyone’s list, but after I explain why it might shoot up your rankings. First it is the battle of the two youngest QBs left in the playoffs, Jayden Daniels and CJ Stroud that also just so happen to be the last 2 years #2 overall draft picks. It would be a game of the new signal callers in the league that would be sure to entertain the masses on February 9th. It would also provide for an amazing run for both of these teams to navigate getting to the Super Bowl itself with the Texans having to overcome being a 8.5 point dog vs the Chiefs and then facing similar odds vs the winner of the MVP favorite battle of the Bills and Ravens. That journey itself would be enough to intrigue most fans but that would be only half of the equation. The Commanders would be facing similar long shot odds as they are also 8.5 point dogs vs the Lions, as the odds sit currently, and then have to beat either a Divisional Foe in the Eagles or Americas feel good “Team of Destiny” Rams should they win in the Linc on Sunday afternoon. This matchup would probably be slightly more lackluster than others that I am leaving off this list as far as the actual game itself, however the storylines of how these two teams get to the big dance is enough for me to put this as the #4 option remaining as I am a sucker for a Cinderella vs Cinderella. However, I think no glass slipper will be found for this one to become the Super Bowl.

3. Eagles vs Bills

No I am not saying this makes the podium because I am an Eagles fan(Go, Birds!!!) but it is because of the interesting matchup of the 2 most powerful running QBs in the league. Now I know what you are thinking, Lamar Jackson and Jayden Daniels are far more elusive runners and to that I would agree. However, I am looking purely at these 2 QBs and being automatic when it comes to the 1-2 yard QB Sneak. The Brotherly Shove has been all but the XP play on NFL Blitz back in the day and Josh Allen has a similar stat line on their nameless QB sneak play in western New York. Then the storyline of Sean McDermott going for his first Super Bowl as Head Coach against the team that gave him his NFL start in 1999 as the scouting director.  Then he became Jim Johnson’s right hand man for those vaunted high pressure defenses from 2004 until he took over as DC in 2009 before leaving Philadelphia for Carolina and then ultimately the Bills in 2017. The Bills would also be looking for revenge from the OT loss they suffered last year in the return of the Kelly Green jerseys in Philadelphia. Also the storyline of Jalen Hurts being the first QB to lose his first Super Bowl appearance and get back to the big dance since, you guessed it, Buffalo’s own Jim Kelly got to the Super Bowl 4 straight times missing out on the Lombardi trophy from 1990-1993. This game would also provide for some of the most rowdy fan bases in one of the best places to get rowdy, New Orleans.

2. Eagles vs Ravens

Yes another Eagles pick here, but the battle of the most recent 2,000 yard rushers in NFL history is too good to pass up. Somewhat ironically, this battle of the Birds would come down to who is better on the ground vs the air; even though I believe that both of these QBs are more than capable of airing it out. That and the idea of Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts going back and forth with the RPO game in tandem has to get all NFL fans excited. We did see this matchup on the 1st of December and it was a dominating defensive effort from the Eagles that proved to be too much for the Ravens. However, looking at the stats alone, the Ravens probably should have come away with the victory if it weren’t for 2 missed Field Goals and a missed PAT from, arguably, a future HOFer Justin Tucker. Derrick Henry and Saquon Barkley would lead the way for one of the greatest trench dominated Super Bowls that we have seen in recent memory. I for one would be excited to see how this rematch from Week 13 would shake out.

Honorable Mentions that just missed the Top 4:

Eagles vs Chiefs – The Andy Reid Bowl again.

and

Chiefs vs Lions – The Battle of the Top Seeds

1. Lions vs Bills

This is the matchup of the 2 most snake bitten franchises in the NFL. A true Underdog story for both franchises would come out of this Super Bowl, with the Lions never getting to a Super Bowl before and the Bills suffering four straight defeats and haven’t been back since. Dan Campbell and Sean McDermott both being aggressive and physical coaches whose personalities have become an identity of their respective teams. This matchup also has the same element as the Eagles vs Bills where Jared Goff would be the first QB to return to a Super Bowl after losing his first appearance, but Goff would have more to prove as the Rams tied for the fewest points scored in Super Bowl History with the 13-3 loss in Super Bowl LIII. This would also be another rematch of a regular season game that did not disappoint with the Bills defeating the Lions in Week 15. In that game, a combined 90 points (48-42) were scored which leads me to believe this would be quite the opposite of the Eagles vs Ravens, as this rematch would have the potential to become the highest scoring Super Bowl ever over taking Eagles vs Patriots Super Bowl LII with the 74 combined points (41-33). Neither team will have lost a meaningful game since that Week 15 matchup and it would lead to even more heartache for the loser of this one. If the Lions were to lose the first Super Bowl appearance in team history, fans might start thinking that Goff might not be the answer because he can’t win “The Big One”. A loss for the Bills would set the record for the most loses in Super Bowl History for a team to not have won(currently tied at 4 with the Minnesota Vikings). It might be wrong of me to think that this is the top game knowing that one fan base will be even more devastated than any other teams fans would feel. But what can I say, misery loves company and I am just thinking about the other 30 teams that didn’t even have a shot to win the coveted Lombardi Trophy.

No matter what the matchup ends up being, the rest of the NFL postseason should have incredible storylines that are sure not to disappoint. Now sit back and watch the next 2 weekends of football to see who gets the privilege of playing the last game of the season down in NOLA on February 9th 2025.
