Best Picks & Predictions For NFL Wild Card Weekend
The 2024 NFL Playoffs will kick off on Saturday with six games over the span of three days.
It is bound to be an exciting Wild Card weekend with all six games bringing a different level of competition and intrigue.
How will the action play out over the weekend?
Los Angeles Chargers at Houston Texans
The Los Angeles Chargers might enter as the lower seed but they will be favored in Houston this weekend.
The home team has limped into the postseason. Despite winning the AFC South once again, Houston is putting up just over 14 points over the last three weeks. CJ Stroud continues to be a franchise quarterback but went through. bit of a sophomore slump this season. Now, a struggling Houston offense will go up against the league’s No. 1 scoring defense.
The Chargers have blossomed in just one year under Jim Harbaugh, winning 11 games. Justin Herbert has a new No. 1 receiver in Ladd McConkey while the run game features a healthy J.K. Dobbins. Expect Harbaugh and his postseason experience to lead the way here.
Pick: Chargers -2.5
Pittsburgh Steelers at Baltimore Ravens
There is an argument to be made that the Baltimore Ravens are the best team, top to bottom, in the league.
The offense has gone to a completely-different level with Derrick Henry in the backfield. This has opened up even more for Lamar Jackson on his way to what could be a third MVP award. He has limited his turnovers while adding more passing yards and overall touchdowns this season. Zay Flowers might miss this game with a knee injury but even if this happens, Mark Andrews and other pass catchers will have to step up.
As for the Steelers, the season has followed a similar script. A hot start quickly fizzled out and the offense looks lost once again. Pittsburgh enters with a great defense, led by TJ Watt, and experience on the sideline in Mike Tomlin.
The spread in this game is large. In a division matchup such as this, it would not be out of the question to back Pittsburgh and expect a low-scoring affair.
Pick: Steelers +10
Extra Bet: Derrick Henry over 20.5 rushes
Denver Broncos at Buffalo Bills
The Denver Broncos were one of the surprise teams in the NFL this season.
Sean Payton took his quarterback high and hit with Bo Nix. Denver enters as a wild card team and will have one of the most difficult matchups of the weekend.
The Buffalo Bills have flourished, even without Stefon Diggs. Josh Allen has been able to spread the ball across different weapons and this has led to an MVP-calibers season. James Cook has also taken the next step, coring 17 touchdowns, which was near the top of the league. The Bills are on a familiar mission this season with a different team.
Pick: Bills -8.5
Extra Bet: Over 46.5, Josh Allen over 39.5 rushing yards
Green Bay Packers at Philadelphia Eagles
Jalen Hurts has been in concussion protocol over the last three weeks but has returned to practice ahead of this matchup. With Hurts back in the lineup, the Philadelphia Eagles are a much different team.
The Green Bay Packers have struggled in recent weeks leading up to the postseason. They will be without Christian Watson as well, eliminating a deep-ball threat. This has the makings of a game that will be played in the trenches. The Packers have leaned on Josh Jacobs over the course of the season while the Eagles are the most run-heavy team in the league.
Defensively, the Eagles have been one of the best teams in the league. Jalen Carter will be a major factor in stopping the run and could be one of the biggest differences in the game.
Pick: Eagles -4
Extra Bet: Under 45.5
Washington Commanders at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Don’t look now but this matchup has a chance to be one of the most entertaining of the entire weekend.
Both the Washington Commanders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers enter with dynamic offenses led by the quarterbacks.
Jayden Daniels has come in and completely transformed the Commanders into a 12-5 team that has what it takes to compete in the NFC. The Bucs entered with higher expectations and experienced many peaks and valleys, especially with injuries.
Tampa Bay has been without Chris Godwin for much of the year but Baker Mayfield and Mike Evans continue to have a strong connection. Evans was able to reach the 1,000-yard mark for the 11th straight season. The key to this game will be Bucky Irving and the Bucs stretch run against the Commanders front.
Washington has struggled to stop the run and this is where the Bucs could gain an advantage. On the other end, Tampa has injuries in the secondary and this is where the Commanders could get free.
Pick: Bucs -3
Extra Bet: Over 50.5, Jayden Daniels over 21.5 completions
Minnesota Vikings at Los Angeles Rams
The Minnesota Vikings were humbled by the Detroit Lions on Sunday night. This led to the Vikings landing the first Wild Card spot and missing out on that first-round bye.
This means the Vikings will return to Los Angeles, a place where they already lost this season. Minnesota has gotten the absolute most out of Sam Darnold this season with one of the best WR groups in the league led by Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison.
As for the Rams, Matthew Stafford continues to be ageless and has played well at home this season.
Pick: Vikings -2.5
Extra Bet: Over 46.5
