Bengals Are Average at Home

We are on the doorstep of week eight of the 2024 NFL season and the Cincinnati Bengals still do not have a win at home. With losses to the lowly Patriots, upstart Commanders, and the surging Ravens the Bengals are 0-3 in “The Jungle”. The last time the Bengals went this long into the season without a home win was 2019, Zac Taylor’s first season as head coach. The win came in week 13 against the New York Jets, also serving as the team’s first win of the season.

The Bengals under Taylor have been painfully average at home. Their home records each year of the Taylor era starting from 2019 to 2024; 2-6, 3-5, 5-4 (1-0 in playoffs), 6-1 (1-0 in playoffs), 6-3, and 0-3 so far in 2024. Their overall record stands at 24-22 including the playoffs. The Bengals .500 regular season win % at home since 2019 ranks 19th in the NFL.

If the Bengals have designs on the playoffs, they have to step it up at home. Of their remaining ten games, half will be at home. After the Eagles game this weekend, the Bengals face the Raiders, Steelers, Browns, and Broncos. All games the Bengals could be favored in–or at least was viewed as the better team before the season.

There is a silver lining for this Sunday, however. The Bengals with Joe Burrow are 5-3 vs NFC teams at home. Burrow’s 70% completion rate, 17 total touchdowns, and 2,345 passing yards in these games are impressive. Burrow has multiple touchdowns in each of these games except for one. The Eagles come to town as 2.5 underdogs to the Bengals.

If the Bengals can find consistency at home, they could find themselves sneaking into the playoffs. Bu they’ll have to take care of their business in games they should win. They have to help themselves before expecting help from around the league for playoff seeding.
