Banchero’s Injury Takes Magic from Sprint to Skid
It was about a week ago when the Orlando Magic’s star forward Paolo Banchero became the second-youngest player to score 50 points with 10+ rebounds to take the team to 3-1 after beating Indiana Indiana Pacers at home. Unfortunately for Orlando, the early leg of the year’s first multi-game road trip has been plagued with disaster.
The five-game stretch started with a 120-109 loss to the Bulls. The Magic falling short in Chicago was due in part to limited production from Franz Wagner who was suffering from illness while also enduring the first outing without a double-digit scorer off the bench. However, the biggest impact from that contest is one that will stretch well beyond that 48 minutes. Banchero suffered a right oblique injury that will keep him out for an estimated four to six weeks.
The next game was a 120-109 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday night. Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley moved veteran center Mo Wagner to the starting lineup to fill in for Wendell Carter Jr. who was suffering from tendonitis in his right knee. Anthony Black started at guard so that Kentavious Caldwell-Pope could slide to the forward spot in place of Banchero. There was still little they could do against their host’s deadly duo of Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell.
Point guard Jalen Suggs had the best night among scorers against the Cavaliers, but their brightest spot was seeing their 18th overall pick Tristan de Silva put in 17 points in Cleveland while sinking all three of his three-point shot attempts and grabbing five rebounds in his first game with over 20 minutes played (20:08).
However, that brings little solace with back-to-back road games featuring the defending Western Conference Champion Dallas Mavericks on Sunday and the West’s top-seeded team in the playoffs last season, the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday. That’s followed up on Wednesday with a crucial Eastern Conference game facing the Indiana Pacers again on Wednesday to complete the road trip.
A big part of any success for this Magic team will be to see bench players continue to contribute at a high rate. The Magic return home on Friday, November 8th to face the New Orleans Pelicans.
