Around the NFC North: Week 1

It was a rough start to the 2024 season for the Green Bay Packers. Not only did they lose to the Philadelphia Eagles 34-29, but they also lost quarterback Jordan Love for three to six weeks with a knee injury. That leaves them starting Malik Willis for the foreseeable future. That’s not a recipe for success. Before his injury, Love threw for 260 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. His favorite target on the night was Jayden Reed who caught four passes for 138 yards and a touchdown. He also added a score on the ground. The Packers take on the Indianapolis Colts in week two.

Sam Darnold got his first win as the starting quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings 28-6 over the New York Giants on Sunday. Darnold threw two touchdowns in the win. Aaron Jones ran for another one. The Minnesota defense held the Giants to under 250 total yards on the day and intercepted Daniel Jones twice. They also sacked him five times. The Viking will have a much tougher test when they host the San Francisco 49ers in week two.

The Caleb Williams era got off to a 1-0 start when the Chicago Bears beat the Tennessee Titans 24-17, but Williams did not have much to do with it. He finished the day with just 93 yards passing. The Bears offense totaled less than 150 yards on the day but became the first NFL team to ever win a game after being down by 17 points and having less than 150 total yards of offense. That was due in large part to the fact that the Bears returned a blocked punt and an interception for a touchdown. The Bears take on the Houston Texans on Sunday Night Football in week 2.

The Detroit Lions capped off opening Sunday with a 26-20 overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams. David Montgomery was the story of the game in overtime. He rushed for 45 yards on the opening drive of overtime and secured the win for the Lions with a 1-yard touchdown run. He finished the night with 91 yards on 17 carries. Jameson Williams also had a huge night for the Lions catching five passes for 121 yards and touchdown. The Lions host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
