Arm Chair GM – Could Rangers Be A Fit For Cody Bellinger?
The Chicago Cubs are trying to trade former MVP Cody Bellinger after he opted into his $27.5 million option for the 2025 season.
Bellinger signed a three-year $90 million dollar deal prior to last season but took a step back in 2024 slashing .266/.325/.426 with 18 home runs and 76 RBI.
With the Texas Rangers looking to revamp an offense that finished 18th in home runs and 20th in RBI, it’s easy to see a fit with Bellinger.
Obviously, the chance that Texas actually pulls the trigger on a deal for Bellinger is less likely than not, it’s easy to see a fit.
Belliger’s versatility makes him an interesting option. He has the ability to play first base, all three outfield spots, and would seemingly slide in at DH.
Much like many things this offseason, the biggest obstacle for the Rangers will be the financial side of things.
Texas would need the Cubs to eat most of Bellinger’s $27.5 million dollar payroll hit for the upcoming season.
However, if Chicago wants to trade the former MVP bad enough, they will be more than willing to make that happen.
Acquiring Bellinger would allow the Rangers to meet the need of a bit which they may not be able to fit into their free-agent budget.
Trading for Bellinger wouldn’t be cheap especially if the Rangers want to include the prospects to have Chicago eat a large portion of his salary.
Despite that, the Rangers no doubt have the farm system to meet what could be a steep need from Chicago.
Clearly, the Rangers making a splash for Bellinger is very much more likely to not happen than they are to come to fruition but playing armchair GM, it’s easy to see a fit.
