Are The Chicago Bears Making The Correct Decision With The No. 1 Pick?

The Chicago Bears currently hold the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Justin Fields has been traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers. This means Caleb Williams, you are (almost) a Bear.

Since the beginning of the college football season, it has been considered the sweepstakes for the USC quarterback. The Carolina Panthers finished with the worst record in the NFL this season but because of a trade that landed the Panthers the top pick in 2023, Chicago will have the chance to land Williams.

The question is, will this be the correct decision?

Let’s start with this. Williams is being viewed as the unquestioned No. 1 pick. This means that if he flops, that is just tough luck for Chicago. This is the pick it has to make. Williams is being viewed as the second biggest “can’t miss” prospect of the last 15 years, behind only Andrew Luck.

Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye also loom, expecting to be picked in the top three. There have not been major rumors about the Bears veering from Williams but Daniels remains an interesting choice.

Daniels, the Heisman Trophy winner, brings versatility in many ways. He can use his legs to make plays and has a strong, accurate arm. Maye possesses these intangibles as well, along with good size. There is a likelihood that Daniels and Maye will be taken over the next two picks. Also, many believe that either Daniels or Maye could have been top picks in the draft in any other year.

The Bears have improved their offense drastically this offseason and Williams can be the capper.

Chicago added D’Andre Swift in free agency and made a trade to acquire Keenan Allen to pair with Moore. Cole Kmet is still on the roster as well. With Williams under center, the Bears can complete its retooling this offseason.

The NFL Draft is just two weeks away and the Bears will likely make Williams the top pick. If they throw a wrench into plans, Daniels or Maye will be sitting there. As unlikely as it is, anything is possible. We will only be able to judge the decisions years down the road once al quarterbacks get a chance to build a resume.
