Are Browns draft hopes already dead and Berry’d? Part 3
Are the draft choices Andrew Berry has made so far as Browns general manager good enough? Nope. End of article.
Well, OK, let’s have some context first. Why is this the conclusion? In Part 1 we discussed how a dearth of first-round picks isn’t an excuse for not maximizing the value of the capital that is available to a GM.
But how have AB’s ones fared? His first ever draft pick was offensive tackle Jedrick Wills Jr.; that has gone poorly and I’ve written about it at length. So let’s agree that was a miss compounded by more inexplicable decisions thereabout which made it even worse, and not belabor the point too much.
Berry’s other first-rounder was cornerback Greg Newsome II at 26th overall in 2021. He’s a serviceable defensive back who’s developed the versatility to be viable both on the boundary and in the slot. He in no way was worthy of a first-round pick.
AB’s bread and butter seems to be Round 2. Safety Grant Delpit and linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah are picks that have hit the plush place.
Cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. was drafted in the first half of Round 3, as was wide receiver Cedric Tillman who has come onto the scene like a hurricane in bed with an earthquake in recent weeks. Both seem like solid selections to this point.
After that it falls off a cliff like a parade of lemmings. So if that’s the butter zone for this front office, somewhere between pick 40 and 75, should that fill the fanbase with confidence for 2025?
The Browns have a first-round selection for the first time since 2021. They appear to have no current plan for a quarterback who can consistently win games. They would likely need to trade up to get one of the top passers in the draft (as I outlined here), and it will probably take more than one first-rounder to get there.
Would you trust the Andrew Berry front office to get it right?
