Americans Fritz, Tiafoe, Navarro Through To US Open Semi Finals
If you’re a fan of American tennis, it’s pretty safe to say you’re having a good few weeks as the US Open nears its end.
Tuesday saw the first day of the quarterfinal of the US Open and the Americans stole the show on their home soil.
Emma Navarro started the day by dominating 26th-ranked Spaniard Paula Badosa in straight sets to advance to reach her first Grand Slam Final.
“I felt like if I could push back a bit and make her think a little on her service game, I could sneak my way back in there. … Sometimes you’re out on the court and you can picture yourself playing a third set. When I was out there, I didn’t picture myself playing a third set. I felt like, yeah, I could come back and do it in two.”
New York’s own will now face world number two Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals on Thursday.
On the men’s side of things, we saw history be made for American Tennis which is starting to show its potential after being on the rise for several years.
Shortly after Navaro reached the semi-finals, Taylor Fritz took on world number four Alexander Zverev for Germany attempting to reach his first-ever Grand Slam semi-finals.
Reaching the US Open semi-finals is exactly what Fritz would do as he took down Zerev in four sets including tie-breakers in both the 1st and 4th.
“I’ve had a lot of looks at quarterfinals over the last couple of years, and today just felt different,” Fritz said. “I really felt like it was my time to take it a step further.”
Fritz wasn’t the only American to make it into the semi-finals as Frances Tiafoe took the court in prime time and took down Grigor Dimitrov in four sets to set up an all-American semi final on Friday.
Whoever wins the match between Fritz and Tiafoe will become the first American man to reach the final of a Grand Slam since 2009 when Andy Roddick fell to Roger Federer at Wimbledon.
“It’s the biggest match of me and Taylor’s lives,” Tiafoe said.”To be able to play him here at the biggest arena, in one of the biggest matches in the world, it’s going to be awesome. I can’t be more excited. I’m going to give everything I got.”
“Frances is a good player in general, but … he really likes playing here, and once he kinda gets going, he plays really well.” Fritz said. “He kind of carries that momentum and the energy from the crowd, the moment.”
