4 Top Landing Spots For Yoshinobu Yamamoto
Yoshinobu Yamamoto has dominated the Japan Pacific League and is ready to make the move to Major League Baseball.
Once he was posted, the 25-year-old right-hander became the biggest starting pitcher on the market and has plenty of suitors. Yamamoto reportedly wants to make his decision before Christmas and that means there is just two weeks remaining before a destination is picked.
At a young age, Yamamoto proved to be the best pitcher in Japan. Over the last three years, he won Pacific League MVP twice and won the award as the league’s top pitcher each year. Yamamoto won 49 games during that span and finished with ERAs of 1.39, 1.68, and 1.16. Yamamoto has multiple pitches that will transition flawlessly to MLB.
There are many teams in on the Yamamoto sweepstakes and it is impossible to know where things stand at the moment. With that being said, we will try our best to make sense of it all. Below, check out four teams that are still in the mix for the Japanese ace.
4. Los Angeles Dodgers
As of Monday night, the Dodgers might be more into the Yamamoto sweepstakes than before. Los Angeles signed Shohei Ohtani to a historic 10-year contract worth $700 million. It was announced that Ohtani is deferring $68 million annually to allow the Dodgers to continue to build a championship team. Now, they will focus on the rotation.
Yamamoto is the best name on the market and will require an insane contract. After the Ohtani deferral, the Dodgers will have plenty of room to add Yamamoto. Maybe Ohtani is even used as a recruiting piece.
3. Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox were expected to go all in this offseason. What exactly does that mean? That is unknown to this point but there are starting pitchers on the market that Boston can still target. Of course, Blake Snell, Seth Lugo, and Yamamoto.
The Red Sox have a history of bringing in players from Japan. Daisuke Matsuzaka heads the list as a starting pitchers but Boston recently signed Masataka Yoshida, who was one of the best bats on the team. It was alleged that Yamamoto would like to join a team with other Japanese players, which means the Red Sox could still be in the mix.
2. New York Yankees
Aaron Judge, Gerrit Cole, and Giancarlo Stanton are all making $30+ million per year. Carlos Rodon is being paid handsomely and if the team wants to retain Juan Soto in free agency, he will demand a contract that outdoes them all.
Regardless, the Yankees have made it clear that they want Yamamoto.
Hal Steinbrenner, unhappy with an 82-win season, has gone all in this offseason. The goal is not only to return to the postseason but to win a World Series. The Yankee front office met with Yamamoto on Monday as his free agency continues. The addition of Soto solidifies the Yankee lineup, if healthy. Cole is coming off a Cy young campaign and the potential of adding Yamamoto would complete an incredible offseason.
1. New York Mets
Steve Cohen and the Mets will not be outbid. We have seen that if Cohen is full go on a player, he will spend and that seems to be the case with Yamamoto.
Now, this is not to say that Yamamoto will sign with the Mets just because of the money. There are other factors at play that could land him in the Bronx but Cohen and company have also shown their intentions with Yamamoto. Of course, Cohen flew to Japan to meet with Yamamoto and have dinner with his family.
The Mets have had a quiet offseason. There have not been extension talks with Pete Alonso just yet and it seems like the team is waiting to hear a decision from Yamamoto. Right now, it seems as though the two New York teams are in the lead.
