4 NFL Head Coaches On The Early-Season Hot Seat
The 2024 NFL season is through two weeks and teams are beginning to find out what they are this season.
There was a large group of new head coaches this season. When thinking about early-season hot seats, it is hard to imagine any would be one-and-done. This includes Dave Canales, who is leading a Panthers team that looks like the worst team in football by a wide margin.
It is almost impossible to predict if a coach will be fired after just two weeks. There is still time before those decisions will be made but early on, these four coaches look to be on the hot seat depending on how their teams finish up.
4. Nick Sirianni, Philadelphia Eagles
It is amazing that Nick Sirianni came into the season as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. It was a major collapse at 10-1 last season and the Eagles went out quietly in the Wild Card round of the postseason. Philadelphia decided to fire the entire staff but kept Sirianni as the head coach. This is a move that doesn’t happen in the NFL.
It was another poor loss that could be put on Sirianni on Monday night against the Atlanta Falcons. The Eagles have not clicked and it is clear that Jalen Hurts misses Shane Steichen as the offensive coordinator. Sirianni has not done much to elevate this team. If the team fails to reach expectations once again this season, Sirianni has to be out.
3. Brian Daboll, New York Giants
There is plenty of controversy around Brian Daboll since winning a playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings. Last season, there was turmoil within the coaching staff and now, Daboll is feeling the pressure and it shows in his postgame press conferences.
Two years ago, Daboll was considered the savior of the Giants but that narrative has gone away. He committed to Daniel Jones under center but is now focused on moving on following the season. The Giants do not typically fire head coaches midseason but if the Giants lose the first six or seven games of the season, it might be time to make a change.
2. Matt Eberflus, Chicago Bears
Like Sirianni, it was a bit surprising that Matt Eberflus was retained by the Chicago Bears with a strong group of head coaches available in the offseason. It is clear that Eberflus campaigned for his job by using the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, which was used on Caleb Williams.
Despite Eberflus being a defensive coach, he is the head coach and the struggles will be on him. Williams and the offense have struggled through two games. The team took advantage of Will Levis and the Tennessee Titans to earn a comeback victory in Week 1. There were high hopes coming into the season and through two weeks, the Bears are unimpressive.
1. Robert Saleh, New York Jets
The head coach hot seat candidates all have similarities. Saleh and Eberflus have connections here. Saleh was given one final chance due to an injury to Aaron Rodgers last season. With Rodgers back, Saleh was given the chance to win with the New York Jets this season. Rodgers will lead the offense but Saleh’s defensive background is supposed to be the driving force defensively.
So far, the defense has not been that dominant force that many try to make it. The Jets have allowed big plays and long drives consistently over the first two weeks of the season. The Jets sit at 1-1 this season but if this team fails to make the postseason, which could happen, Saleh will be out.
