3 Starting Pitchers Left On The Market For The New York Mets

The New York Mets hit the biggest home run of the offseason by agreeing to a free-agent deal with Juan Soto.

The superstar outfielder came to Queens on a 15-year deal worth $765 million. The team is still working on other deals, including returning Pete Alonso to first base, but it could use more help in the rotation.

The Mets signed Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes this offseason already. The plan as of now is to turn Holmes into a starting pitcher. With Kodai Senga and David Peterson returning, the Mets currently have four starters in place. It is believed that the team will go with a six-man rotation to keep players fresh and healthy.

This means there might be two spots remaining in the rotation. Here are some free-agent options that the Mets could target moving forward.

Walker Buehler

Buehler is an interesting case. He came up as one of the great young pitchers in the game but now, he is 29 years old and has an injury history. Buehler made 16 starts last season after missing 2023 recovering from Tommy John surgery. He was a major piece in the postseason during the Los Angeles Dodgers World Series run. Buehler will fit into the Mets plan as a short-term option looking to reset his market.

Roki Sasaki

Sasaki has been posted and is free to sign with any Major League team. He is currently ranked as the Top 50 international prospect list for 2024 and 2025. Sasaki has an incredible fastball that can reach 102 mph but sits around 99 consistently. He played four seasons with Chiba Lotte and logged a 2.02 ERA with 11.4 K/9. He is a true front-line starter and one that will come cheap early on. Sasaki will sign a low-level contract to enter Major League Baseball and the Mets have plenty of resources.

Luis Castillo

This remains the most unrealistic option but Castillo is as dynamic as anyone in baseball. Why not consider it, Mets? The answer to that is the contract situation. The Mets have not shown an interest in a long-term, lucrative deal. The Seattle Mariners have floated Castillo’s name into trade talks so they can avoid this. If the Mets want a true ace, Castillo could be a name to watch and because of the contract aspect, he will not require a huge package in return.

Sean Manaea

Manaea completely reset his market during his only season with the Mets in 2024. After being on four teams in four years, Manaea will land a pretty hefty contract this offseason. The Mets remain the favorite but until pen hits paper, anything is possible. Manaea went 12-6 with a 3.47 ERA while acting as the Mets ace last season. Nathan Eovaldi recently got three years for $75 million by the Texas Rangers. Manaea will surpass this contract and likely hit nine figures. This seems to be one of the Mets top priorities at the moment.
