3 Pivots For New York Yankees After Losing Out On Juan Soto

Juan Soto is a New York Met.

The major news broke on Sunday night as the 26-year-old superstar outfielder decided to go crosstown and joins the Mets. He signed a 15-year deal worth $765 million with the potential to go even higher.

Hal Steinbrenner and the New York Yankees offered $760 million over 16 years with a $60 million signing bonus. Soto ultimately decided to leave the team that he helped lead to the World Series in 2024.

The Yankees will now have to pivot to other options to fill many voids on this roster. The original pivot was reported to be former Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Willy Adames but he decided to go to San Francisco over the weekend.

Below, these three players could be in the mix for the Yankees in free agency.

Christian Walker

Walker has built a reputation for himself as a slugger over the last three years. The 33-year-old first baseman has hit 95 home runs over the last three years. This includes 36 home runs in 2022 and drove in 103 runs the very next year. This wold fill many holes for the Yankees. This is a team that could use another slugger with Soto gone and will need to fill a hole at first base. These two sides have been linked for weeks now and could be the perfect fit.

Corbin Burnes

There were reports that the Yankees were in on both Burnes and Max Fried despite the outcome for Soto. Well, it is hard to believe that New York would have given Burnes a long-term deal if they landed Soto. Now, he is back on the table. The Yankees have worked to create a strong rotation behind Gerrit Cole, including Carlos Rodon. Burnes is a legitimate ace and would give the Yankees arguably the best 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation. Also, there is an aded bonus of getting Burnes from a division rival in Baltimore.

Pete Alonso

Could the Yankees return the favor? Pete Alonso is currently a free agent and is favored to return to the Mets. The Yankees could swoop in and get a bigger and better slugger than the aforementioned Walker. There is certainly a fit across town for Alonso and it would hit the Mets where it hurts. And, as we know, there is a lot of money on the table right now for the Yankees since Soto fell through. It will be interesting to see if Alonso considers the pinstripes this offseason.
