3 Observations For New York Jets Following Week 1 Loss
The New York Jets began a highly-anticipated season with a disappointing loss against the San Francisco 49ers. Aaron Rodgers remained on the field and that might have been the only positive to take away from Monday night.
Below, check out three observations surrounding the Jets in Week 1.
3. Breece Hall needs to be better in short yardage
Breece Hall is one of the most explosive running backs in the league. This has been the case since he came into the league. On Monday night, he showed that he needs to be more. Hall is a true home-run hitter in the backfield but needs to improve in short-yardage situations.
Hall rushed 16 times for 54 yards against the Niners. Yes, the front seven for the Niners is elite but Hall had chances to make an impact on third downs in short-yardage spots. He came up short on multiple occasions, including on a two-point conversion in the second half. This is not to say that Hall is an issue offensively, because he’s not, he is among the best backs in football. There is always room to improve and for Hall, it’s short yardage.
2. Coaching staff is not championship level
We knew coming into the season that Robert Saleh’s job was in jeopardy. In any other situation, he would have been fired at the end of last season but got a final chance with Rodgers coming back. The same can be said about Nathaniel Hackett, who should not be coaching anywhere in this league.
On Monday night, the coaching staff was outcoached and outclassed against a team that has done it before.
Saleh is not a good head coach. We know that already. Hackett has shown his true colors without Rodgers. The Jets might be able to go out and beat teams like the Tennessee Titans and New England Patriots but if the bar is to win a Super Bowl, this game on Monday night was very telling for the coaching staff.
1. Hassan Reddick’s absence was felt
There were question marks displayed about the Jets’ front without Hassan Reddick. He was acquired in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles and did not report to camp because of his contract situation. There was one big winner for the Jets on Monday night and it was Reddick.
The Jets could not generate pressure against San Francisco at all in Week 1. The team struggled to stop the run and allowed Brock Purdy to stand in the pocket and go through reads all night long.
Bryce Huff led in the offseason. John Franklin-Myers was also a casualty in free agency. Reddick was expected to step right into this role but his absence has been glaring — and we do not know if there is an end in sight. What we do know is that after watching the team on Monday, the Jets need Reddick.
