3 Observations For Baltimore Ravens After Week 1 Loss

The Baltimore Ravens went to Kansas City in Week 1 for a rematch of the AFC Championship Game.

The Ravens were an inch away from what could have been a game-tying, or game-winning score, as time expired but fell just short.

What stood out in Week 1 for the Baltimore Ravens this year?

3. Isaiah Likely is a breakout star

This showed last season but Isaiah Likely is a breakout star for Baltimore. Mark Andrews went down with an injury last season and Likely stepped up in a big way. On Thursday night, he was the biggest weapon for the Ravens and made the highlight play as he juked his way to a long touchdown.

Likely finished with nine catches for 111 yards and a touchdown. He was an inch away from his second score on the final play. He was targeted twice in the red zone on that final drive and spent much of the second half on the field as Andrews was used as a pass protector. There could be a shift at the position coming in Baltimore.

2. The offensive line has issues

The offensive line was a question mark for the Ravens coming into the season and it showed on Thursday night. This led to many scramble plays from Jackson and quick passes to Zay Flowers around the line of scrimmage. The game plan did not help by running the ball as much as it should have either. Derrick Henry carried the ball five times and scored a touchdown on the first drive but touched the ball just three times the rest of the half.

The pass rush for the Chiefs was able to get in the backfield at will but the mobility of Jackson proved to be a problem, which will be the case in many matchups. This seems to be a year where Jackson will be asked to use his legs a lot in order to make up for the protection up front.

1. This team is dangerous

This is not a breaking news announcement. The Ravens were one of the best teams in the league last season and are contenders to return to the AFC title game. What we saw on Thursday night was a team that will remain at the top of the league.

Yes, there are question marks. There are with every team. Jackson showed an inability to throw the ball with accuracy and consistency. The defense allowed a few big plays. The offensive line is a weak point. But the Ravens have a dynamic group of skill players and remain strong in the front seven. This makes for a successful season.

Going to Kansas City in Week 1 and dropping a close game in the final seconds is nothing to downplay. John Harbaugh was going for the win as well if Likely was in bounds on the final play. Despite the outcome, Baltimore remains Super Bowl contenders and this performance might have only enhanced this take.
