3 Early-Season Hot Seat Candidates For Washington Commanders

The Washington Commanders came into the season with tempered expectations, led by Jayden Daniels under center.

The front office brought in a new general manager in Adam Peters and head coach with Dan Quinn. They created the most turnover in the league during the offseason but left glaring holes at important pieces on the roster.

Those missing pieces showed in Week 1 during a 37-20 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

3. Benjamin St-Juste

Benjamin St-Juste has been a starter in Washington for a few years now. He is still under his rookie contract but has not improved since coming into the league.

Washington improved the group of linebackers and defensive edge but did not do much to make upgrades in the secondary. Peters wanted to give the young guys another chance to succeed and it has gotten off to a dreadful start. There is no doubt that the secondary is the weakest part of the team early on.

St-Juste struggled to stay in front of Mike Evans, who had his way against Washington once again.

2. Andrew Wylie

Andrew Wylie came over in free agency last offseason. This was the same year the Commanders hired Eric Bieniemy to be the offensive coordinator. The immediate feel was that he came over with his coordinator from Kansas City. It turns out that both were failures. Bieniemy is not at UCLA and Wylie must go to the bench.

Cornelius Lucas is back with Washington. He is a longtime backup along the offensive line but he good enough to take over the right tackle position. It has taken too long to make this move. Wylie is making $8 million this season but it’s time to eat the money and put him on the bench. Wylie struggles in pass protection and got called for a costly penalty on Sunday once again.

1. Emmanuel Forbes

The Ron Rivera era landed many atrocious draft picks in the first round but Emmanuel Forbes might be at the top of the list. This is not just because he is a mediocre player. It is because Rivera and company opted for Forbes over Christian Gonzalez, who was expected to be a top pick and could be a future All-Pro.

During his rookie season, Forbes showed an inability to cover and would get pushed around because he is not big or strong enough. That was the case once again on Sunday afternoon.

Case and point, Forbes stayed in decent position on a short-yardage situation against Chris Godwin but the receiver made a strong move off the line and just bullied his way through Forbes. To make matters worse, Forbes committed a pass interference penalty and face mask on the same play, which led to being benched.

This has to be his spot for the remainder of the season. The Commanders brought in veteran corner Michael Davis in free agency. If he is healthy, he has to play.
