3 Best Times New York Giants Could Go Away From Daniel Jones
It is no secret that the New York Giants are interested in moving on from quarterback Daniel Jones.
The front office did not trade up during the 2024 NFL Draft to land a quarterback and entered the season with Jones under center once again. Through two weeks, Jones is healthy but the Giants are 0-2 following a loss to the Washington Commanders.
In the season opener against the Minnesota Vikings, Jones looked lost and the offense scored just six points. The offense took a step forward against a bad Commanders’ defense. The road is going to continue to be tough and the team is already behind the right ball.
Jones might not be the future in New York but at what point will head coach Brian Daboll decide to place him on the bench?
3. End Of The Season
This is the dark-horse candidate. Of course, we are assuming full health and it is hard to imagine Jones making it through the entire season. This is because the coaching staff is already looking to the future so if the team continues to lose, Jones will be replaced. The next six games for the Giants are extremely difficult and it is hard to find wins. Beginning the season with five or six losses does not bode well for the future of the quarterback.
2. Before Bye Week
This is the popular time to bench a quarterback so there is an extra week for the backup to prepare. The problem is, the Giants have a later bye in Week 11. For Jones to remain under center this long, that means New York has found a way to win a few games over the course of the first half. Daboll could defer to Drew Lock, who signed in free agency, or go back to Tommy DeVito. The Giants have already shown that they do not believe in DeVito either with the addition of Lock.
1. After Week 4
Jones has thrown for 364 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in two games. He has completed 54.3% of his passes and has a rating of 66.6. The difficult road continues with a matchup against an elite defense in Cleveland before a Thursday night matchup with the Dallas Cowboys.
The Commanders defense is struggling as a whole so it is not surprising to see Jones find some semblance of success, despite a loss. If he goes backward against Cleveland and especially Dallas on prime time, this could be the time to make the change.
Say the Giants are 0-4 and Jones turns in two bad performances, Daboll could use the Thursday night game week as a mini bye to prepare his backup quarterback to take over under center.
