3 Best Landing Spots For Pete Alonso If He Does Not Return To New York Mets
Pete Alonso has been advertised as one of the game’s most prolific power hitters since entering the league.
Alonso is coming off a down year, headlined by a home run in the wild card round that sent the New York Mets into the division series. As free agency continues around the league, it seems to be clear that the market for Alonso is not heating up like Scott Boras thought it would.
The favorite to land Alonso has been the New York Mets but that could be changing moving forward. If the Mets do not want to bring back Alonso, these three teams could be interested in his services.
San Francisco Giants
This could be the offseason that the Giants have been waiting for. After missing out on big-time names such as Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge, San Francisco went in with both feet once again. San Francisco landed Willy Adames on the largest contract in team history. Now, San Fran has been linked to ace Corbin Burnes. Regardless of the position there, the Giants should be looking to upgrade first base. Alonso would give the Giants a much-needed power hitter at the position and completely upgrade the infield with Adames. If San Francisco lands Alonso and Burnes to pair with their new shortstop, it would be an extremely-successful free agency.
Seattle Mariners
The Mariners decided to move on from Ty France in July. The team got 71 RBIs from the position last season and could be looking for a major upgrade. Tyler Locklear is currently the sixth-ranked prospect in Seattle’s system but the team might not be ready to hand over the job to him right away. Alonso cold be the perfect bridge as he gives the Mariners a chance to compete right away while continuing to develop Locklear. Now, this all depends on how far away Locklear is and if the Mariners view him as the first baseman of the future.
Houston Astros
The Astros might be at the top of this list if Alonso does not return to the Mets. The Jose Abreu experiment did not work as Houston released him and his three-year deal last season. Houston traded Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs, losing a major bat in the lineup. Alonso is not near the overall hitter that Tucker is but could ultimately replace the power numbers. This will also be contingent on Alex Bregman and his situation moving forward. Houston offered Bregman a contract but he has not signed anywhere yet. If Bregman leaves, Alonso could be a major target. Even if Bregman returns, the combination would give Houston great power at the corners.
