3 Best Landing Spots For Michael Penix Jr. In 2024 NFL Draft
The 2024 NFL Draft is just one day away and one of the most intriguing players available is Michael Penix Jr.
There have been a top tier of quarterbacks identified. Of course, it begins with Caleb Williams, who is likely to go first overall to the Chicago Bears. Next, it’s Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye but J.J. McCarthy has worked his way in as well.
That leaves Penix Jr. He put together a six-year collegiate career that included plenty of success but also had a history of injuries. This could be a concern coming from a 23-year-old quarterback preparing to step in as a rookie.
There are talks that Penix Jr. could creep near the Top 10 or he could be taken in the second round. It will be interesting to see where he lands. With that being said, these three teams would be solid landing spots.
3. New York Giants
Will the New York Giants actually take Penix Jr. with the No. 6 pick? This would not be the first time that the sixth-overall pick upset Giant fans.
New York needs skill positions. There is a young, unproven group of wide receivers to go along with Devin Singletary, who will replace Saquon Barkley. The Giants need playmakers. At No. 6, the answer should be either Marvin Harrison Jr. or Malik Nabers, whichever is available.
There have been rumors about the Giants being enamored with Penix Jr. in the days leading up to the draft. If this is true, New York needs to trade back and select the Washington quarterback later in the first round. If it at No. 6, it would be considered a massive reach and would not be a guarantee that the future is in the building.
2. Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos just made a trade for Zach Wilson, which was an interesting move, but will be really be the starter moving forward? There needs to be a backup plan in Denver and Penix Jr. in the second round could be just that.
This does not have the feel of a first-round pick after the trade with the New York Jets. The Broncos have been in search of a new quarterback since Peyton Manning left. The Russell Wilson experience did not work out and now, it is Wilson. This does not seem like a winning formula and Penix Jr. could be a target.
1. Minnesota Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings are going to find a quarterback somewhere. Kirk Cousins is now in Atlanta and it seems unlikely that the team would want to roll with Sam Darnold this season. The Vikings have two first-round picks and could use them to move up but if not, Penix Jr. could be a backup plan.
Minnesota currently holds No. 11 and No. 23 in the first round. There have been talks about the Vikings packaging those picks and moving up to take one of the top three quarterbacks. Minnesota could also hold onto its assets and take Penix Jr. The Vikings have one of the best situations for a rookie quarterback with an elite group of skill position players. It begins with Justin Jefferson but includes Jordan Addison and TJ Hockenson.
The Vikings are one of many teams in this draft that can opt for a quarterback and if it is not in the top five, it could be later in the first round with Penix Jr.
