3 Best Landing Spots For Kirk Cousins
Kirk Cousins has spent the last six years in Minnesota as quarterback of the Vikings. Prior to this season, Cousins missed just one game in a Vikings’ uniform but was limited to just eight this year after suffering a torn Achilles.
Now, Cousins is facing free agency and could be looking for one more contract before calling it a career. It is unknown where he will land but these three teams could be interested.
3. Washington Commanders
It would all come full circle if Cousins landed back where he was drafted over a decade ago. In 2012, after using the No. 2 overall pick on Robert Griffin III, the then Redskins drafted Cousins in the fourth round. He ended up being a long-time starter for Washington but it did not want to give him a long-term deal.
Instead, the Commanders placed back-to-back franchise tags on Cousins before he left for Minnesota.
Cousins has put up some big numbers in Minnesota and could give Washington and immediate upgrade under center. Of course, this is unlikely because the team has the second-overall pick in the upcoming draft. They have been linked to a quarterback but if the front office wants to go a different way, like Marvin Harrison Jr., Cousins is out there. Let’s not forget, Washington has the most cap space in the league this offseason.
2. Las Vegas Raiders
Antonio Pierce is now the full-time head coach and the Raiders will be in search of a quarterback.
Jimmy Garoppolo was added last offseason but quickly replaced. He will serve a two-game suspension next season but would not have been the option under center anyway. This leaves Aiden O’Connell along with multiple opportunities this offseason. Those include moving up in the draft or looking to free agency.
Cousins remains the best fit in free agency. Why? His ability to throw the ball at a high volume. Davante Adams gives Cousins a legitimate No. 1 receiver to work with in Las Vegas. The Raiders have a strong defense and could be a dark-horse in the AFC with the right quarterback.
1. Minnesota Vikings
The obvious choice remains a return to Minnesota. The Netflix documentary “Quarterback” showed Cousins and his family at their home in Minnesota and it seemed like they enjoy being up there. Only they know the truth about the situation but this remains a big factor.
It will be interesting to see if Minnesota is willing to give Cousins another fully-guaranteed contract. This is likely what he will look for over his final years. Cousins has produced enough to warrant this deal and is already comfortable in the system with Kevin O’Connell.
The pieces are there for Minnesota right now. It has also been targeted as a candidate to potentially move up in the draft. Free agency comes first so a decision will be made on Cousins soon enough.
