3 Best Head Coach Options For Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys made the decision recently to let Mike McCarthy go without coming to terms on a new contract.
McCarthy was brought to Dallas in 2020 to replace Jason Garrett. In five years with the Cowboys, McCarthy went 49-35 with two NFC East division titles. The Cowboys made the postseason three times under McCarthy with just one victory.
After a season full of injuries, including Dak Prescott missing most of the season, the Cowboys remained competitive and earned seven victories. This was not enough to persuade Dallas to keep McCarthy in his role.
Now, Jerry Jones will be looking for a new head coach. Below are three major names to watch for the job opening.
3. Kellen Moore
Kellen Moore has been waiting for his chance to be a head coach in this league. He is now the offensive coordinator in Philadelphia, where many assistants have gone onto get jobs very soon after. For Moore, this could be a one-year marriage if a team is interested in his services as the head man in charge. Moore has experience running the offenses for successful teams. This season, he has the luxury of Saquon Barkley and a loaded offensive line. Jones could be interested of landing his next head coach from a division rival.
2. Deion Sanders
Deion Sanders is going to be the most attractive big name linked to the Cowboys this offseason. With his son and Travis Hunter going to the NFL this year, there are no major emotional ties keeping Sanders in Boulder. This does not mean that he is going to leave but with the Dallas job open, anything is possible. Sanders is regarded as the best cornerback of all-time and spent five seasons with the Cowboys, where he helped the team win a Super Bowl in 1995. Right now, it is in the early stages and we do not know if there is mutual interest. What we can assume is that Jones will have interest in bringing Sanders back to Dallas.
1. Ben Johnson
This seems like a major cop out but Ben Johnson is once again the hottest coaching candidate this offseason. after returning to Detroit after eight jobs opened last year, there is a good chance he finds a new home this year. Jones is an owner with a big ego and landing the top coaching candidate on the market would bring allure back to Dallas. Johnson has shown off an incredible offensive mind in Detroit and that would translate well to Dallas with the likes of Prescott and CeeDee Lamb on the roster. If Johnson leaves Detroit, many teams will be making offers and expect Dallas to be one of them.
