3 Backup Quarterbacks Who Could Shock The World In Week 18

The Week 18 schedule in the NFL is always a tricky one with many starters across the league resting for the postseason.

Of course, this is seen most among quarterbacks who do not want to risk injuries before the most important time of the year. This does not mean that the final week of the season will be irrelevant. There will be many players looking to hit incentives while some backups look to keep, or get, jobs.

This goes for the quarterbacks as well. Below, these three have a chance to put on a show and impress over the weekend.

3. Sam Darnold

This is not exactly a bold prediction given the fact that Darnold has played this season and is in the best scenario possible.

Darnold came in on Christmas Day against the Baltimore Ravens and threw a touchdown pass late in the game. The San Francisco 49ers will be the No. 1 seed in the NFC and many starters will get an extra week of rest in Week 18, plus a bye. This gives Darnold a chance to start one game and showcase himself for next season.

The former top-three pick has bounced around the league since coming in and attempting to be a savior for the New York Jets. Now, he will have one final audition for the 2024-25 season.

2. Tyler Huntley

Huntley started a playoff game for the Ravens last season and came within half a yard of putting the game away. Of course, it ended up being a 99-yard fumble return giving the Cincinnati Bengals a win.

Huntley will get the Week 18 start as the Ravens are locked into the top seed in the AFC. He has appeared in just four games this season and has nine pass attempts. Despite playing a vaunted Pittsburgh Steeler defense with many offensive starters out for the Ravens, Huntley has a chance to win this game.

Huntley is a free agent at the end of the season. There are many teams around the league that need quarterbacks so he could view this as one final tryout. In rivalry matchups like this, neither side wants to go down despite their current position.

The Steelers need to win this game to keep their playoff hopes alive but the Ravens will not lay down.

1. Jeff Driskel

The Cleveland Browns will start its fifth quarterback of the season in Week 18. Typically, this amount does not go with a winning team but Joe Flacco has calmed things down in Cleveland. Along with a great defense, Flacco is prepared to lead the Browns into the postseason.

Before Wild Card Weekend, Jeff Driskel steps in for a Week 18 start. The Browns will be on the road against the Cincinnati Bengals. As a lifetime backup, Driskel has experience around the league. He has not played this season but is preparing to step into action for a team that has clinched its spot in the postseason.

Cleveland is no stranger to shuffling quarterbacks this season and it has worked each week. There might not be the stifling defense this weekend with starters sitting out but as we mentioned before, division games are a toss up. The Browns will have a chance to win one more game before the playoffs begin.
