2024 Washington Football: Season Preview, Schedule & Predictions

2023 Season-In-Review

Record: 14-1, Loss vs. Michigan In National Championship (34-13)

It was a historic year for the Huskies last season. Michael Penix Jr. and an elite group of wide receivers led Washington to the National Championship appearance. The Huskies finished 13-0 in the regular season, including two victories over Oregon en route to a PAC-12 title. They won a classic against Texas in the Sugar Bowl, which was the first semifinal matchup. Washington will enter the 2024 season as the national runner-up and with a new head coach.

Offense: New staff deals with massive loss

Jedd Fisch enters his first year at Washington with a new staff and a new group of offensive talent. Michael Penix Jr. and Rome Odunze were both Top 10 picks in the 2024 NFL Draft and means that the Huskies will be a new-look group.

What Fisch will have is Mississippi State transfer Will Rogers taking over under center. An experienced quarterback, who is one of the top passers in history, means that the Huskies will be competitive once again. Just how competitive, especially in year one in the Big Ten, who knows?

Rogers will come over with Cal transfer Jeremiah Hunter. He led Cal in receiving in each of the last two years. The offensive line will also get a boost with San Diego State transfer Drew Azzopardi. He will anchor the left side of the offensive line, which remains the biggest problem within the offense.

Running back Jonah Coleman comes over with Fisch from Arizona and will be part of an explosive duo. Cameron Davis will be back in the mix this season after missing 2023 with a knee injury.

Defense: Senior-led defense has experience

Fisch brought in a new staff and Steve Belichick was brought in to be the defensive coordinator. The former New England Patriots linebackers coach, under his father Bill Belichick, Steve comes with high hopes of leading a strong, experienced defense.

The prowess for a defense starts in the middle. Linebackers Carson Bruener and Alphonzo Tuputala return after being third and fourth on the team in tackles respectively. Bruener finished with 86 while Tuputala added 69. In the secondary, Kamren Fabiculanan and Elijah Jackson will be patrolling as upperclassmen. An Arizona transfer also comes over in Ephesians Prysock, who was an All-Conference selection in 2023.

The transfer Wildcats that Fisch brought over includes Russell Davis II and Isaiah Ward along the defense line. Fisch will give Belichick plenty to work with in the transfer portal. This includes an intriguing option in Division II transfer Zach Durfee.
