2024 Utah Football: Season Preview, Schedule & Predictions

2023 Season-In-Review

Record: 8-5, Loss vs. Northwestern in Las Vegas Bowl (14-7)

Utah was without Cam Rising last season due to injuries and still was able to get off to a quick start. The Utes began 4-0 before losing a defensive struggle to Oregon State. Utah would defeated Cal and USC before losing three of the next four games, all to ranked opponents. Utah ended its season with a win over Colorado before entering bowl season.

Offense: The return of Rising sparks Utes

Utah had big-time aspirations heading into the 2023 season but injuries to Cam Rising hurt production for the Utes. With the starting quarterback returning, the expectations are there once again.

Not only is Rising back, Utah will get tight end Brant Kuithe back on the field after an injury. Kuithe has been one of Rising’s favorite targets when healthy. Utah also landed USC transfer Dorian Singer in the portal, who was a First Team All-Pac-12 selection in 2022. With all weapons put together, Utah is expected to make a major jump through the air. The Utes averaged just 166 passing yards per game last season and 15 touchdowns.

In the backfield, Ja’Quinden Jackson, who led the Utes in rushing, is gone so it will be a committee in 2024. Micah Bernard will return after 16 carries and a season-ending injury off the field last season. The injury bug hit the Utes’ offense in many ways.

Utah has been strong along the offensive line. The major question is, how healthy will this team be and how effective will players be coming off major injuries?

Defense: Utes return Top 20 unit

Utah continues to be a hard-nosed football team and the defense has showed it off. The Utes allowed just 19.3 points per game last season, which was 18th in the nation. The unit returns eight starters and production is expected to be there once again.

Jonah Elliss and his 12 sacks will be the biggest loss for Utah. Logan Fano and Lander Barton will be expected to make up for lost production. Both players will be after quarterbacks all season long.

In the secondary, Utah added Michigan transfer Cameron Calhoun and Kenan Johnson from Georgia Tech. This duo will make up for losses in a unit that will be the biggest question mark for the defense.

Utah will be one of the toughest defenses in the Big 12 once again this season.
