2024 Texas A&M Football: Season Preview, Schedule and Predictions

2023 Season-In-Review

Record: 7-6, Loss in Texas Bowl (31-23) vs. Oklahoma State

It was another down year for the Aggies in 2023. It began in Week 2 by giving up 48 points to Miami and led to losing three out of four games midseason. The biggest win of the season came at a neutral location against Arkansas but there was not much else to cheer about. After a season-finale loss to LSU, the Aggies agreed to a buyout with Jimbo Fisher. Texas A&M will enter the 2024 season with Mike Elko on the sidelines.

Offense: Weigman’s Potential Leads Charge

Key Players: QB Conner Weigman, WR Moose Muhammad III, OT Trey Zuhn III, OL Ar’Maj Reed-Adams (Kansas transfer), WR Jahdae Walker, WR Noah Thomas, RB Reuben Daniels

Key Losses: Ainias Smith (PHI), Bryce Foster (Kansas), QB Max Johnson (North Carolina), WR Evan Stewart (Oregon)

Conner Weigman suffered a foot injury that kept him out for the remainder of the year after a strong start to the season. The 6-foot-3 quarterback completed 68.9% of his passes and threw eight touchdowns to just two interceptions. The Aggies are hoping that Weigman can take the next step by staying on the field and producing using his big arm and accuracy.

Weigman will be without two major weapons from last season but Texas A&M returns options that will have to take a step up in role. Ainias Smith is now in the NFL while Evan Stewart transferred to Oregon. This offense took a major step forward from where it was in 2022. Moose Muhammad will be be in a spot to take on an extended role after flashing in 2023. Jahdae Walker returns after finishing second on the team with 590 receiving yards.

The offensive tackles give the line a boost this season. The combination of Trey Zuhn and Chase Bisontis has a chance to be one of the best in the SEC. This unit struggled in pass protection last season but the Aggies brought in even more massive guards to help improve. This includes Ar’maj Reed-Adams from Kansas while Mark Nabou can take over at center. They will look to protect Weigman and open holes for a group of runners that will look for a standout.

The running back room will be made up of Amari Daniels, Le’Veon Moss, and Rueben Owens, who is the early favorite to separate himself.

Defense: Aggies Look To Get To QB

Key Players: DE Nic Scourton (Purdue transfer), DT Shemar Turner, DE Shemar Stewart, DT DJ Hicks, LB Taurean York, LB Scooby Williams (Florida transfer), S Bryce Anderson, CB Tyreek Chappel, CB Will Lee III (Kansas State transfer)

Key Losses: LB Edgerrin Cooper (GB), S Demani Richardson (CAR), Josh DeBerry (DAL), DL Walter Nolen (Ole Miss)

The run defense was strong for Texas A&M last season led by a strong group of linebackers. Edgerrin Cooper is now in the NFL and the unit needed improvements, both in the middle and on the edge.

The Aggies were able to get to the quarterback last season and should be able to once again. Nic Scourton transferred in from Purdue after leading the Big Ten with 10 sacks last season. He has a chance to make an immediate impact as an All-Conference type player in the SEC. The pass rush also makes things easier for the secondary.

The cornerback play for the Aggies was a question mark heading into the offseason. Elko, who is a defensive head coach, added Will Lee III from Kansas State and Scooby Williams from Florida in the portal in hopes of adding depth at corner. Bryce Anderson returns at nickel and is an elite player in the nation.

With Elko running the show, the defense for Texas A&M will look to find consistency.

2024 Texas A&M Football Schedule

The road for Texas A&M is difficult once again and it begins with a Week 1 matchup against Notre Dame. The Aggies also find road matchups against Florida and Auburn while hosting Texas and LSU within the SEC.

Texas A&M has not won double-digit games since 2012, when it finished 11-2. In a shortened season in 2020, the Aggies finished 9-1. Aside from that standout year, Texas A&M has averaged 5-6 losses per year. Could that streak be snapped this season? It all comes down to the quarterback play and defensive consistency.
