2024 NFL Preview: New York Jets Season Outlook, Schedule & Predictions

2023 Season-In-Review

Record: 7-10

Aaron Rodgers ran out of the tunnel holding an American flag on the opening Monday night of the NFL season. Four plays into the year, a torn Achilles ended the Jets’ season. For all fans that held out hope, it was a nice thought but once Rodgers went down, the season was over. Despite an overtime victory against the Buffalo Bills, it was done. The Jets would lose three in a row before winning three to get to 4-3. Zach Wilson and New York would lose five in a row and six out of seven to drop to 5-9. The only bright spot of the season was snapping an incredible losing streak to the New England Patriots. Even that lost juice due to the poor state of each team.

2024 New York Jets Season Preview

Offense

Key Additions: WR Mike Williams, OT Tyron Smith, OT Morgan Moses, OT Olu Fashanu, WR Malachi Corley, RB Braelon Allen

Key Losses: TE CJ Uzomah, OT Duane Brown, OT Billy Turner, OG Laken Tomlinson, C Connor McGovern

The Jets enter the 2024 season with the same expectations they did at this time last year. With Rodgers returning, those aspirations are the Super Bowl. Will Rodgers be able to last an entire season at 40 years old? That is yet to be seen.

What we do know is that the Jets have elite skill-position players. It begins with Garrett Wilson, who has a chance for a major breakout year if Rodgers is healthy. Breece Hall has also established himself as one of the top running backs in the league. This duo alone gives the Jets hope but the offense went out and made more additions.

New York signed Mike Williams to a one-year deal once he was released by the Los Angeles Chargers. It also drafted Malachi Corley in the third round. These were much-needed additions after Allen Lazard ended up being a bust last season.

The other issue for the Jets was the offensive line. This was also addressed right away as the front office attempted to build this team into a championship contender. Morgan Moses came over and will be slated on the right side. The team was in need of a left tackle and landed Tyron Smith on a one-year deal. He is a true anchor at left tackle but has struggled to remain healthy. This is the reason the Jets opted for Old Fashanu out of Penn State with the 11th overall pick in the draft. Alijah Vera-Tucker is another injury-plagued guard who has shown flashes.

New York has struggled with injuries in recent years but at full strength, it is a team that is hoping to compete in a loaded AFC.

Defense

Key Additions: DE Hassan Reddick, DT Javon Kinlaw, DT Leki Foto, CB Isaiah Oliver

Key Losses: DE Bryce Huff, DE Carl Lawson, DT Quinton Jefferson, S Jordan Whitehead

The Jets might have won just seven games last season but it was not the fault of the defense. The unit finished third in total defense in the league and is expected to take another step forward.

The loss of Bryce Huff in free agency was a big one but the Jets seemed to find an answer in Hassan Reddick from the Philadelphia Eagles. There has been a halt in that plan as Reddick has requested a trade since he has not been extended. That situation remains in limbo.

New York excelled against the pass and this is no surprise with Sauce Gardner on the outside. He has turned into one of the top cornerbacks in the league at a young age. DJ Reed and Michael Carter II give the Jets a more-than-viable trio at corner.

The front seven was also strong for the Jets. Quinnen Williams took some time to turn into the star the Jets had hopes for but he was arrived. He is now joined by former first-round ick Javon Kinlaw and Leki Fotu, who is a known run stopper. Jermaine Johnson will be asked to pick up some extra slack on the edge with Huff in Philadelphia. In the middle CJ Mosley and Quincey Williams make up a strong duo.

The Jets are expected to one of the best, if not the best, defense in the league. Again, at full strength, this will be the case. Injuries have plagued the Jets recently and that is a major thought once again.
