2024 NFL Preview: New York Giants Season Outlook, Schedule & Predictions

2023 Season-In-Review

Record: 6-11

The New York Giants were among the bottom feeders in the NFL last season. That was apparent from the season-opener with a 40-0 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. This started a 2-8 start to the year for New York. The Giants got a bit of a spark from Tommy DeVito, who led the team on a three-game winning streak, but the magic ran out just as quickly as it came. The Giants finished the year 6-11 and missed out on the postseason.

2024 New York Giants Season Preview

Offense

Key Additions: WR Malik Nabers, QB Drew Lock, RB Devin Singletary, OG Jon Runyan, WR Isaiah McKenzie, OT Jermaine Eluemunor

Key Losses: RB Saquon Barkley, TE Darren Waller, WR Parris Campbell, QB Tyrod Taylor

When its year six and there is still a question mark around your quarterback, do you really have a franchise option? That is the scenario in New York and the answer is trending towards no.

Daniel Jones remains as the starting quarterback for a franchise that is planning to move on from him at the end of the season. What could go wrong? Jones has been underwhelming over the course of his career and seems to be going backwards, especially in terms of injuries. To make matters worse, Jones will not have his biggest weapon in the backfield in Saquon Barkley. What he will have is a new No. 1 weapon on the outside.

The Giants used their first-round pick on standout receiver Malik Nabers out of LSU. During training camp, Nabers showed potential of a superstar in the making. Next to Nabers are receivers that fans seem to be excited about but have not been elite options like Jalin Hyatt and Wan’Dale Robinson. New York will also be without Darren Waller, who announced his retirement from the NFL.

New York has also bene unable to protect Jones over the course of his career. That has been the case in recent years as the offensive line struggled. It is not expected to be a productive unit once again. The front office attempted to fix certain problems along the interior by signing guards Jon Runyan and Jermaine Eluemunor. Andrew Thomas will continue to be the anchor at left tackle but must remain on the field.

The overall excitement about this Giants defense is based on the performance of Jones and that does not bode well for overall expectations.

Defense

Key Additions: DE Brian Burns, S Jalen Mills, S Tyler Nubin

Key Losses: S Xavier McKinney, DT A’Shawn Robinson, OLB Isaiah Simmons

The lack of excitement around the offense puts extra pressure on the defensive group for the Giants. Overall, it has been a lackluster unit but the front seven has a chance to be extremely productive this season.

The Giants made a splash in the offseason by acquiring Brian Burns from the Carolina Panthers. He has been one of the most explosive edge rushers in the league during his career. Now, the Giants will have Burns opposite Kayvon Thibodeaux, who logged 11.5 sacks last season. On the interior, Dexter Lawrence has turned into an elite defensive tackle. There is not much depth behind Lawrence but the overall promise of the front seven is at a high.

The same cannot be said about the secondary. To make matters worse, New York lost Xavier McKinney in free agency. This leaves mediocre option Jason Pinnock and second-round pick Tyler Nubin as the starting options. At corner, Deonte Banks showed flashes as a rookie and will be the No. 1 option alongside Cor’Dale Flott.

The linebackers also saw an improvement with Bobby Okereke. He was an addition last year and proved to be a leader in the middle right away.
