2024 MLB Season Outlook: New York Mets Preview, Predictions And Expectations
The New York Mets will attempt to compete this year while developing some young players. The farm system is also bolstered after moving aging arms in the rotation. It was an underwhelming offseason but the same might not be said next year. We will discuss that when we get there. For now, the Mets will look to fly under the radar in 2024.
2023 SEASON IN-REVIEW
Record: 75-87, 4th in NL East
Postseason: N/A
It was a disastrous season for the Mets. After a 100-win campaign, Steve Cohen spent a ton of money to re-sign players and add Justin Verlander. The problem was, the front office did not add enough. Instead, it focused on bringing back players that were part of a 2022 season that crumbled. Now, it seems as though the Mets have their sights set on 2025 but could look to compete right away.
2024 SEASON PREVIEW
Key Losses: DH Daniel Vogelbach, SS Luis Guillorme
Key Additions: SP Sean Manaea, SP Luis Severino, OF Harrison Bader, RP Shintaro Fujinami, RP Jorge Lopez, SP Adrian Houser
The Mets might have the richest owner in sports but the offseason was underwhelming. This does not mean the payroll will decrease this season as the Mets still have to pay Verlander and Max Scherzer.
This season, the Mets signed multiple one- and two-year deals in the rotation and bullpen so there will be plenty of cap opening up heading into 2025.
This begins with Luis Severino and Sean Manaea to shore up the rotation. New York also made a trade for Adrian Houser. It is a new-look rotation for the Mets this season and it has a chance to be a good one. The problem is, the floor for this rotation can be very poor. It is all a big question mark.
The bullpen has been a problem for the Mets over the years but it has turned into a strength heading into 2024. Edwin Diaz is back from a season-long knee injury and will return to his closer role. He anchors a deeper bullpen than the mets have seen, including the return of Adam Ottavino. New York also signed Shintaro Fujinami. He has struggled with his control but has a high upside.
The Mets’ lineup is a tale of two halves. The top five has a chance to be as good as any in the league. Of course, Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso bring the star power and can be penciled in daily. Francisco Alvarez is a young stud behind the plate that will continue to improve. If Starling Marte returns to form, the Mets can score some runs but there is little firepower at the bottom.
Brett Baty struggled in his role last season while Harrison Bader is not much of an offensive threat. The Mets have been linked to J.D. Martinez but the front office does not seem eager to add an option at DH, which would significantly lengthen the lineup. Instead, it seems as though they want to give at-bats to Mark Vientos.
The Mets have a chance to compete for a Wild Card spot if all goes right. They can also be a team that wins 75 games once again. There might not be a more interesting situation in the league than the 2024 Mets.
