There was plenty of change for the Brewers this offseason — on and off the field. It began with Craig Counsell leaving for a major contract from the Chicago Cubs. Milwaukee hired Pat Murphy as its next manager. The front office also traded Corbin Burnes to the Baltimore Orioles.
Jackson Chourio, MLB’s No. 2 prospect and future piece for the Brewers, signed an eight-year, $82-million extension with the team despite not making his Big League debut.
After all of this change, how will the Brewers look this year?
It might be difficult for Milwaukee to return to the top of the NL Central. Counsell left for a rival and there will be a rotation without the presence of Burnes and Brandon Woodruff, who signed an extension with the team but remains injured. The starting rotation is not deep but the bullpen remains a strength. Can this last over the course of 162 games and supplement the rotation? That is the major question.
The Brewers added Rhys Hoskins to play first base this offseason. The slugger will provide pop behind the lines of William Contreras and Christian Yelich. Along with Chourio, Milwaukee can find production in the lineup. Yelich was one of the league’s best players during his early years in Milwaukee but has fallen off since then. The Brewers do not need him to return to his MVP form but need more than they have gotten.
Overall, the Brewers seem to have an eye on the future but have a roster that can compete this year if the rotation performs above expectations.
