2024 Michigan Football: Season Preview, Schedule & Predictions
2023 Season-In-Review
Record: 15-0, Win in National Championship vs. Washington (34-13)
It was the year that Wolverine fans have been waiting for. It was the third consecutive year that Michigan defeated Ohio State on its way to a Big Ten Championship. The Wolverines punched their ticket to the CFB Playoff for the third straight year and finally picked up a victory. It began by defeating Alabama in overtime before dominating Washington to compete an undefeated season. Michigan was crowned National Champions and this allowed Jim Harbaugh to make the move into the NFL.
Offense: Wolverines look to replace championship production
Michigan will have plenty of production to replace on the offensive side of the ball. Not only did the team lose their head coach but J.J. McCarthy was taken in the first round of the NFL Draft, Blake Corum is gone, along with all five starters along the offensive line. New head coach Sherrone Moore will have to find new starters at man positions and this leaves the unit up in the air.
The one constant will be Donovan Edwards, who has been part of a two-headed monster with Blake Corum over the years. He returns as the No. 1 back and could be in for a major year. He will run behind a new offensive line. This includes transfers Myles Hinton from Stanford and Northwestern’s Josh Priebe. They will attempt to bring some experience to a new-look line.
Colston Loveland leads pass catchers after an All-Big Ten season at tight end. He has the makings of an All-American player in 2024.
If Moore’s first game as a head coach is any indication, the Wolverines will live on the ground once again. Of course, we mean the victory against Penn State where Michigan did not throw a single pass in the second half. This means Edwards is in for a major workload. It will be a priority for Michigan to take care of the ball and play strong defense once again.
Defense: NFL mind comes to Ann Arbor
The Wolverines lost one former NFL coach and will gain another on the defensive side of the ball. Wink Martindale was brought in to be the new defensive coordinator in Ann Arbor. He built the reputation in the NFL of being a coordinator who likes to apply pressure and send extra guys at the quarterback. Will this continue in Michigan?
The defensive line for the Wolverines is anchored by Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant, who make up one of the best duos in the nation. Derrick Moore and Josaiah Stewart will take on an extended role along the edge. They split time last season off the bench and can step into the starting role.
The linebackers will provide that needed depth to get after the quarterback. Transfers Ernest Hausmann (Nebraska) and Jaishawn Barham (Maryland). Will Johnson was an All-American corner last season and will lead a secondary that also returns Rod Moore at safety.
Martindale is a massive addition for Michigan this season and can lead the next great defense in Ann Arbor.
