2024 Boise State Football: Season Preview, Schedule & Predictions

2023 Season-In-Review

Record: 8-6, Loss vs. UCLA in Starco Brands LA Bowl (35-22)

It was a slow start for Boise State before turning it on late in the season. The Broncos lost its first two games before getting even at 2-2. The team would alternate wins and losses over the next five weeks, including a one-score loss to Fresno State on the road. The Broncos ended the season with four consecutive wins heading into bowl season.

Offense: High-powered unit stacked

Offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter comes to Boise State with NFL experience and a loaded group to work with. The question is, who will be the starting quarterback?

Malachi Nelson comes in after transferring from USC. In any other scenario, it would be assumed that he would be No. 1 on the depth chart but Maddux Madsen is still in the mix. He missed the spring with an injury but will get a chance to compete for the starting spot.

The leader of the offense is back in Ashton Jeanty. He returns as one of the top running backs in the nation. Last season, Jeanty rushed for 1,347 yards, which placed him seventh in the nation with 112.3 per game. He scored 19 touchdowns and was a true dual-threat with 159.7 scrimmage yards per game.

Jeanty will have a loaded group up front to run behind with four returning starters. Chris Marshall and Prince Strachan are monsters along the line, along with Austin Bolt.

Koetter will have plenty to work with and it will be interesting to see how it all comes together once he names a starting quarterback.

Defense: Broncos return All-Conference talent

Boise State is becoming a team that is known for its defense and the 2024 season might back up that notion further.

Ahmed Hassanein was second in the Mountain West with 12.5 sacks last season. He is a First Team threat this year, along with Jayden Virgin-Morgan. This duo of edge rushers gives the Broncos an elite one that can get to the quarterback. In the middle of the defense, linebacker Andrew Simpson returns after being a Second Team All-Mountain West selection.

The secondary is loaded with experience, returning three starters. A’Marion McCoy led the team with three interceptions and he will have another strong corner to work with. Cal transfer Jeremiah Earby was a starter and will be once again.

Boise State is expected to contend for a spot in the CFB Playoff and can do so on the heels of its defense.
