Boston Bruins sign Tyler Johnson to a PTO

On August 31st, the Boston Bruins shared that they had inked a professional tryout (PTO) contract with veteran forward Tyler Johnson as they prepare for the 2024-25 season. Johnson, who most recently played for the Chicago Blackhawks, will have the chance to vie for a spot on the Bruins’ roster during training camp.

This acquisition is part of the Bruins’ ongoing efforts to bolster their forward depth, especially on the right wing. With David Pastrnak leading the top line on the right side, the Bruins continue to assess their options for the second-line right-wing position. Johnson, a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Tampa Bay Lightning, brings valuable experience and a proven ability to deliver in crucial moments.

Bringing Johnson on a PTO aligns with the Bruins’ strategy of bringing in seasoned players to training camp. Last year, they offered PTOs to Danton Heinen and Alex Chiasson, with Heinen ultimately securing a contract. Johnson aims to make a lasting impression on the coaching staff and secure a spot on the roster, following in Heinen’s footsteps. It’s uncertain if his 5v5 play can hold up to what is expected in Boston after a dismal performance with Chicago. Additionally, it’s uncertain if the Bruins are still considering bringing in Blake Wheeler or Kailer Yamamoto as additional PTO options.

As the Black and Gold gear up for the upcoming season, Johnson’s performance in training camp will be closely scrutinized as the team refines its lineup. He will have to earn a spot in the lineup during camp and the preseason tilts that are coming up. We’re only 20 days away from the Bruins’ preseason debut. Buckle up, folks!
