1ST DRAFT PICK IN UTAH HISTORY, IGINLA SIGNS ENTRY-LEVEL CONTRACT
Every year, just between the end of the season and the NBA draft, every sport and hockey lover stays alert for the news. The anticipation is about the new season, and this year is no different. Teams did the usual tradition of picking young talents to become the next world superstar. The Utah Hockey Club has existed since April 2024 and has been waiting to break history. Now, it can proudly put its name in the history book as one of its players was selected for the 2024 NHL Draft. Tij Iginla has been selected for the 2024 NHL, and seeing his name on the news is unsurprising. The talented player was the No. 6 pick in the draft.
Utah Drafts Tij Iginla
Tij is 17 years old. Last season, he was tied for sixth after scoring 47 goals in total out of 64 games played for Kelowna. Tij had 12 points (six assists, six goals) for Canada in seven appearances at the 2024 IHF World Under-18 championship. Canada ended up winning a gold medal in the competition. Tij signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Utah Hockey Club, which will earn him $975,000 and an additional 1 million dollars as performance bonuses. “It was really cool to hear a big cheer when my name was called,” Iginla said Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at the Utah development camp. “I think the fans have been so welcoming to the hockey club and to me as well. It looks like we’re going to have some of the best fans in the League down the road, and it should be a lot of fun.” Tij isn’t the only person happy about the news. Utah’s manager, Bill Armstrong, is proud and joyful about the news. He reminisced about their first meeting and how he wanted Tij to be the best. “I told him when I met with him, I said, ‘We’ve got a lot of 20-goal-scorers on our roster, we’re looking for a 50-goal scorer. No pressure. We really love him, not only as a person but as a player. He has everything that we like.” Iginla apparently ‘inherited’ some of his talents. His father, Jarome Iginla, was one of the best to have played the game, and he was known as a Hockey Hall of Famer. Tij’s plan for the offseason is to continue to work hard with his father on his side. The goal is to improve his game immensely. Next season, he plans to spend one more season at his current club, Kelowna, but he is expected to move to a full-time centre. Last season, he switched between center and left wing. The Utah director of player development said he loved Tij’s hard work, his high motor skills, and his willingness to play inside. The NHL needs all these qualities because they are the ingredients of a goal scorer. He emphasised how Tij could be a great asset to the NHL with all of these assets.Following His Father’s Steps
The move means a lot to Tij and his father. He would head to Salt Lake City, where his father had some interesting history. Tij reminded reporters about his father’s winnings in the city, such as winning the Olympics in 2002. It was a surreal story for his father because he almost didn’t make it to the 2002 Olympics either. Fun Fact: Jarome Iginla was invited to join the team at the Winter Games. He was so surprised when he got the call, which was an opportunity to play with Steve Yzerman and Joe Sakic. At first, he thought it was all a prank. Later in the competition, Iginla scored twice in a gold medal match against America and helped Canada to win 5-2. In another Olympics in 2010, the older Iginla made history again when he won gold for the second time. Other places Jarome had made history:- Calgary Flames
- Pittsburgh and Boston
- Colorado and Los Angeles
