16 and 34 Shine in Third Period in 3-2 Win v Nashville
Toronto squared off on this cold, Wednesday night against a Nashville squad that has been on a recent losing streak.
Nashville opened the scoring in the first when Jon Marchessault took advantage of a strange bounce and got it past Woll. The Leafs did not look particularly sharp through the first 40 minutes of this game.
The second period went scoreless, with the Leafs getting shots on net a lot quicker than they did in the first.
Toronto took charge of the third period, scoring 3 unanswered goals to gain a comfortable lead.
First, Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews found themselves as linemates yet again, with Craig Berube shaking up the lines. The puck came back behind the net, and found the stick of Mitch Marner. Marner quickly tapped it to Matthews who was toe-to-toe with Juuse Saros, and Matthews was able to tap it in for the goal.
Not too long after, Marner found himself on a breakaway with a Nashville defender, and instead of a shot, Marner dropped it back to the trailing Auston Matthews who deked through a Nashville player, and slid the puck through Saros’ five-hole for his second goal of the game. Craig Berube spoke on Auston Matthews’ efforts after coming back from his injury.
“I thought tonight was his best game (since returning from injury). I know he scored, but to me, he had his legs more tonight. He skated better and had his legs. He capitalized on his opportunities, which is important — it is what he does. Overall, it is coming. It’s coming.”
Later on a 5-on-3 powerplay, the Leafs were able to score their first with the two-man advantage, with a brilliant play from Matthew Knies, parked in front of the net and dangled around a Nashville forward to pass it to William Nylander just under the left face-off dot, who was able to find the open cage.
Nashville was able to score later in the period to cut the lead to 3-2, on an unlucky goal against Joe Woll.
Mitch Marner assisted on all three goals as the Leafs won for the 10th time in 12 games.
Berube spoke post-game on the team’s performance, and their willingness to stick to the game plan when scoreless.
“I thought our guys stuck with it, didn’t open it up, and played good defense. In the third period, we started to attack a little bit more. The power play got us a big goal.”
This loss marked the 5th straight for the Predators. Juuse Saros stopped 25 of 28 shots in the loss.
Aside from the weak goals, Woll looked really sharp, coming up big in key moments. Woll stopped 22 of 24 shots, increasing his record to 6-2-0.
The Maple Leafs wrap up their three game homestand Friday when they take on the Washington Capitals.
